The brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri has officially been found in the St. Bernard Parish, La. water supply following last week's death of 4-year-old who got the lethal infection when playing on a slip 'n slide.

"The water is safe to drink and there are basic precautions that families can take -- such as chlorinating their pools and avoiding getting water in their noses -- to protect themselves, though infection from this amoeba is very rare," Louisiana state health officer Jimmy Guidry said in a press release.

St. Bernard Parish is five miles from New Orleans.

The brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri has officially been found in the water system of Washington DC.

Read this - got stored water? I would not drink water out of a faucet there, no way. Guy says that water is safe, I would not drink it. Wouldn’t want to hear later, “Well, I thought it was safe.”

I’m more afraid someone’ll throw a gator in the lake. One that’ll be just waitin’ for me to come along.

I run a public water supply. Four 300 foot deep wells. The water is wonderful. I am very leery of surface water supplies though. They require tons of treatment to be safe. Just look back at Milwaukee. Surface water supply. All Summer they have cattle standing in the creeks and rivers to keep cool. Defecating and urinating in the water supply non-stop. And it all heads into the water supply.

I’m here in this area.

Oh no I’ll run for the hills. not really

BP oil spill like Global warming were media and gov hoaxes.

BP oil spill was no disaster. global warming is non-existant ,totally made up

The whole aim of the media is to constantly menace us with crises after crises so that we run to the government for help. well tyring to paraphrase the Mencken quote

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

H. L. Mencken

I would run the Parish water through my Berkey to purify the water before I drank it. I’d also double check the size of the amoeba and my Berkey specs. to make sure my Berkey would get it out.

-— avoiding getting water in their noses -—

Well that’s reassuring.

Imagine if Poland Springs gave such reassuring advice.

Agreed. Our aquifer is of similar depth, although the water is very hard (typical MN) it’s always safe.

I worked for a water authority in NYS. Their biggest problem was the damn birds. I believe they have now covered all our tanks but we still have a huge reservoir.

I live in a suburb of New Orleans, and our water supply comes from the Mississippi. I have been buying bottled water since the early 1980s when there was a water contamination scare in our area. I have heard stories about bottled water not being safe, but I still feel better drinking and cooking with bottled water than the River water.
