A US nuclear expert brought in to offer advice about the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant says leaks of radioactive water into the sea are not a major concern.
It is believed about 300 tonnes of contaminated water is seeping into the ocean every day.
Responding to criticism over its handling of leaks at Fukushima, the plant's operator TEPCO brought in expert Lake Barrett, who spent several years dealing with the Three Mile island nuclear accident in the United States.
Mr Barrett has just completed his first tour of the shattered Fukushima complex.
Appearing in Tokyo after inspecting the site, he said the leaks were being managed but TEPCO needed to better explain what is going on at the plant to the Japanese public.

“...300 tonnes of water ....”
Most Americans would say xxx gallons of water .... I would do the conversion but “tonnes” was used which could be one of those EU non-standard measures.
If a tonne is about 2200 pounds, and a gallon of water weighs 8 pounds, then 300 tonnes of water comes out to about 82,000 gallons (if my math is correct).
About 68,000 gallons a day if my math is correct. I guess tonnes sounds scarier.
300 tonnes is way more scary than 80,000 gallons.
I found a calculator at BPs site. 300 tonnes is 92,358 gallons.
metric tonne of water to US gallon of water Conversion Results :
Amount : 300 metric tonnes of water (t wt.)
Equals : 79 251.62 US gallons of water (gal)
Fraction : 79 251 31/50 US gallons of water (gal)
English ton vs. metric tonne ?
I thought rounding up a little would be okay, but...
A metric ton is bout 1000 liters (depending on the density of the water), so roughly 300,000 liters per day. A liter can be visualized as about 1 quart. Divide by 4 and get roughly the number of gallons.
Heck I dunno, I’ll ask my son who’s in his second year of college Calculus.
Its Japan so its probably metric. 2,204 lbs per ton, 8.34 lbs per gallon = 264.2686 gallons per ton at 4 deg Celsius.
Which brings us 79,280 gallons. Which the previous poster had. My number from BP was wrong because that was for oil.
Nuts. Multiply.
It’s cocktail time.
All a charade. They have already discovered more leaks. And the 1,000 steel tanks that are holding thousands of tons of highly radioactive waste, are starting to rust out. No worries though. They have constructed a moat and most leakage is flowing directly into the ocean. Oh, and they will probably admit within two weeks that reactor cooling water is directly discharging to the ocean through cracks.
Why isnt every world gov. on this right now?
Souldnt there be robotic machinery,1000 workers, pouring cement..at least working on the damaged storage building...to prevent possible death of the pacific?
I dont understand.....yrs have gone by and the situation is STILL precarious ?
