Back in 1975 I had a chance to fly a little with HMX-1, which, along with supporting the Quantico Marine Base’s other organizations, flies the Presidential “White Top” helos. I made a flight to Anacostia as co-pilot with one of the Presidential pilots to drop off parts for the standby VH-3 Presidential aircraft located there.
We were in an HMX-1 helo, Presidential pilot in command. I was an active duty USMC officer, Intelligence Officer with my home squadron and CH-53 pilot. However, the security at Anacostia was so tight that while I was allowed to get out of the aircraft to do a walk-around post flight inspection, I was not allowed to leave the immediate area of our aircraft.
