Mental issues that rise to the level of a concern do IMO need to be made public into a general data base so they can not get guns.

In this case, a guy who uses excuses to shoot others and who almost killed someone before this with a gun should have been on some national data base for sure.

Now unless you want to lobotomize the mental, we have to have the mental documented and restricted from certain activities.
Do you want one as a crossing guard?
Do you want them having sensitive security clearances?

Holmes the Batman movie shooter passed the FBI and CBI background check.

The Sandy Hook shooter shot his mom and stole her guns.

Your beloved background checks do not seem to be "keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and crazies" worth a damn. So go pimp gun control at DU or Kos.

Some of the craziest guys I know have the highest security clearances. They are also stone cold killers who happen to be the guys who popped Bin Laden. They're the guys who do the toughest and dirtiest jobs around. It's the moral compass that's screwed up in this case. Here's the deal, you can't legislate against insanity. And by the way, this regime thinks that if you own a gun, believe in Jesus Christ (especially if you think he's coming back soon) and vote conservative or think that home schooling ought to be a viable alternative to public education, you're nuts. Moreover, not only are you crazy but you need some good old fashioned government intervention.
