President Obama has formally authorized American shipments to Syria of non-lethal equipment and supplies specifically aimed at countering the threat of Bashar al-Assad’s chemical weapons as the world waits for them to be neutralized.

In a signed order, Obama today waived prohibitions of such shipments by the Arms Export Control Act, determining that the assistance is “essential to the national security interests of the United States.”

The materials — including chemical weapons-related personal protective gear and medical supplies — will be sent to “vetted” members of the Syrian opposition, international aid groups inside Syria, and any other organizations working to “prevent the preparation, use, or proliferation of Syria’s chemical weapons,” an administration official said.

If we'd had those things in 1770's, I guess we'd still be speaking British.

This gear has three uses. 1-Protection against chemical attack by Assad.

2-Protective gear that allows the rebels to safely work with the dangerous chemicals to create their own WMD.

3-Allow the rebels to safely use their own chemical weapons without fear of exposure.

4-Allow Iran to assess the equipment to determine the vulnerability of U.S. troops in the field to chemical weapons during future engagements.

This will allow them to repackage CW into new delivery systems, and to clean up after they do this.

One big barrier to making improvised CW devices is the exposure of the makers to the agent.

I expect a new class of improvised device being deployed.
