Nebraskans have observed the Colorado flooding with detached concern, but their worries are about to become reality, at least if they live along the South Platte River.
Virtually all of the creeks mentioned in reports of last week's flooding shared something in comon -- they drain into the South Platte River.
National Weather Service officials are warning that there will be flooding, but they're not entirely sure how bad it will be, because a number of river gauges were damaged by debris.
A coordinating team from the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency is already in Ogallala to help local officials, and the American Red Cross is ready to find housing for displaced residents, if needed.
Flood stage is 9 feet at Roscoe, east of Ogallala, and water is likely to reach 12.5 feet Thursday or Friday.
Interstate 80 was under construction the last time the South Platte flooded, in 1965, so it's hard to predict exactly how bad this year's flooding will be.
Those who remember that flood, however, won't be surprised if there are problems farther down stream in North Platte

My wife came home from work, and said HWY 84 just North of Espanola NM flooded. She said it looked like as many a 20 homes had flood damage with some of them under water.

Mother Nature isn’t being kind. It would take many inches of rain just to close the cracks in the ground down here... It’s so sad to see the people trying to find their possessions in inches of mud.
It happened to my parents, who lived in Texas City during hurricane Carla. They had 18 inches of water in their home. The sewage backs up and everything gets ruined. I have a book that was written about that hurricane.

It is expected to take at least several more days for rain-swollen rivers to crest. As the water sweeps down the South Platte River toward Nebraska, towns in Colorado’s northeastern plains are bracing for flooding. Logan County officials issued mandatory evacuation orders for the small community of Crook on Tuesday morning, directing residents to take shelter in a high school.

CDOT and the local towns will be rebuilding thru next year.
An early winter will keep some roads closed until next year and some communities cut off from easier access.
I hadn’t thought about the hard winters up your way. It’s not like Texas, where the rebuilding can usually go on all winter long - in my area anyway.
Wow, just so many people out of their homes for ‘who knows how long’. I couldn’t live in the frozen ‘north’ George. In fact, we get thousands of ‘snowbirds’ in motor homes traveling down here during the winter.
