OSU Police Obtained Army Surplus Armored Personnel Vehicle

COLUMBUS, Ohio -

The Ohio State University police department has added a very unique new tool to their fleet: an armored military vehicle.

If you want the ultimate in protection, an armored personnel carrier is the way to go. If negotiations work like they did for OSU's Department Of Public Safety, you could get one for free.

Lindsay Komlanc, director of marketing and communications at OSU said the police department obtained the vehicle through Army surplus at no cost.

Although it still looks like an armored military vehicle, she said police plan on changing the appearance by removing the top gun turret and repainting the rest of the vehicle.

"This unique, special purpose vehicle is a replacement for a police fleet vehicle and will provide us with enhanced capabilities as an all-hazard, all-purpose response vehicle," Komlanc said.

Police Chief Paul Denton was not available Tuesday, so NBC4 was unable to find out specifics for where an armored vehicle could be used on an urban campus.

I’m always against these weapons being in the hands of the police, but I’m almost tempted to be okay with it since they’ll most likey be using it on some of the Scarlet and gray cult that overtakes greater columbus for several months a year.

It was free?

I've read about towns that get this kind of stuff "for free", and the first time it breaks down they discover they can't afford the maintenance and it gets parked, and eventually sold for scrap/salvage.

They're very specialized and limited production compared to commercial vehicles. That usually translates into high cost and wait time for parts, and can mean a substantial investment in special tools just to work on them, and finding someone who knows how.

Michigan got an A-10.

And Detroit has been deemed too dangerous to fly it over.

The SWAT Team can come busting out of their Rambo-mobile in full scarlet and grey Buckeye regalia. With a Buckeye sticker on their helmet for every kill!

Go Bucks!
