What you mention in your post reminds me of such people's blind spots--if a Muslim does something bad, then it's Religion's Fault instead of anything in particular about Islam

That's kind of a quasi-Alinsky rule of the modern Left. Every event must fit into The Narrative, which is resolutely anti-Christian, anti-capitalist, and anti-Western.

If an event directly contradicts the Narrative, then they play tricks with the scope of the story and they scale the Narrative up or down accordingly. A lefty or Muslim murdering a dozen people becomes either scaled down into an unimportant Local Crime Story (TM Ace), or, more likely, is scaled up into a Larger Issue, as with the above story.

Muslim terrorism means: Religion is bad.

Massacres by leftists or Muslims mean: Guns are bad.

Chernobyl means: Nuclear power, not Communism, is bad. Etc. Etc.

One thing to do is to take a look at what news stories get more attention than others--and who makes the decisions about that attention.
