That's kind of a quasi-Alinsky rule of the modern Left. Every event must fit into The Narrative, which is resolutely anti-Christian, anti-capitalist, and anti-Western.
If an event directly contradicts the Narrative, then they play tricks with the scope of the story and they scale the Narrative up or down accordingly. A lefty or Muslim murdering a dozen people becomes either scaled down into an unimportant Local Crime Story (TM Ace), or, more likely, is scaled up into a Larger Issue, as with the above story.
Muslim terrorism means: Religion is bad.
Massacres by leftists or Muslims mean: Guns are bad.
Chernobyl means: Nuclear power, not Communism, is bad. Etc. Etc.
If an event directly contradicts the Narrative, then they play tricks with the scope of the story and they scale the Narrative up or down accordingly.
One thing to do is to take a look at what news stories get more attention than others--and who makes the decisions about that attention.
