Bob Funk: Where the Jobs Are—and How to Get One
WSJ ^ | Sept. 20, 2013 | Stephen Moore

Posted on 09/22/2013 4:14:03 PM PDT by 1rudeboy

The man who matches companies with workers talks about the skills gap, the harm from ObamaCare, and the incentive not to work. But he'll still find you a job.

Here's something you don't often see in Washington: a businessman trying to repeal a law that helps his company. That's Bob Funk's latest mission in life. He's the president and founder of Express Employment Services, the fifth-largest employment agency in America, with annual sales of $2.5 billion and more than 600 franchises across the country. This year he will place nearly half a million workers in jobs.

"ObamaCare has been an absolute boon for my business," he says as we sit in his new office headquarters near downtown Oklahoma City. "I'm making a lot of money thanks to that law. We're up 8% this year. But it's just terrible for the country. I see that firsthand every day."

Why is the health-care law good for Express but bad for the country? "Firms are just very reluctant to hire full-time workers," Mr. Funk says. "So they are taking on more temporary help, which is what we do." ObamaCare imposes new mandates and penalties on companies with more than 50 full-time employees—and even those working 30 hours a week are considered full-time.

He quickly adds: "The problem isn't just ObamaCare, though. It's the entire regulatory assault on employers coming out of Washington—everything from the EEOC"—the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission hits companies hard when employees claim age, race or sex discrimination—"to the Dodd-Frank monstrosity. Employers are living in a state of fear."

Mr. Funk is worth listening to because few people are as intimately connected to the U.S. job market.

Yep Illinois has the highest unemployment except for Nevada. Fortunately I have a couple of jobs....they don’t pay great but I’m pretty much my own boss and I like them.
If they don’t work out I’m outta here. Laguna Beach or New Orleans.

Item 3. will be making the true cost of American labor lower and so you must include eliminating the EEOC, ADA and a host of other regulations and laws that make employing a living, breathing human too dangerous and costly.

Yes indeed. Those alphabet agencies are job killers — except for the bureaucrats.

Most of these jobs require physical labor? There are quite a few older people who have been laid off who couldn’t do these kinds of jobs. They end up using up their savings and taking menial part-time jobs.

No, things are not looking up.

Incorrect. Lots of jobs require paperwork or going to the courthouse to make records searches or government filings.

Others require driving pipelines.

Still others require meeting with homeowners to discuss lease options, etc.

In short, there’s a job for everyone, no college degree required.

However, the true slackers will come up with excuses for every job.

They don’t really want to work.

They are *fine* taking government handouts or mooching off of family even though it means lowering their standard of living to poverty levels.

The people who aren’t working...aren’t working because they choose to not move, and they are going to come up with excuses to rationalize that they aren’t a real slacker, just suffering from a “bad economy” or some other such nonsense.

The reality is that there are tens of thousands of unskilled jobs that are going unfilled or even unapplied for because so few of the “unemployed” are actually wanting to really work.

True, but why work when so much of what one makes is taken by the government? In many cases, it doesn’t pay to work Sad, but that’s where we are now.

You are off-point. You are just giving excuses for *why* people choose to not work.

The bigger point is that the oilfield jobs are there for everyone unemployed today.

If you want to work and move to any of the oil zones in Texas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, et al, then you will be hired and you will be paid more than $60,000/year even without a college degree.

The jobs are there.

The excuses to not work them are also there.

Unemployment today is a lifestyle choice (oh look, “I” get free Section 8 rent for a free apartment, free foodstamps, free cash for having kids, unemployment, Social Security “disability” checks, etc.).

People who aren’t working are choosing to ignore the massive tens of thousands of high-paying oilfield jobs that are going unfilled due to so few job applicants.

That’s very different from a crappy economy that has no jobs.

This economy has the oilfield jobs.

Well, I dunno.... my husband was laid off from an oil company 4 years ago (experienced accountant with good job record). Yes, the oil companies need folks in the field, but the other jobs are not as plentiful.

I understand that there are people who don’t want to work, but there are also people who can’t find work, often they are those over 55.

Plenty of jobs, now. This is not 4 years ago.

How about a best 2 out of 3 arm wrestle about it? (if you are a small, weak person)
