Check this out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humphrey_Bogart

I did NOT know Humphrey Bogart had been in WORLD WAR I... in the Navy...

Always liked his movies. “Casablanca”, “The Roaring Twenties” and “Treasure of the Sierra Madres” some of my all time favorite movies.

“..the situation was setup such that they really would have all died in that crowded liferaft, about 5 or so were already in the water just hanging on the sides. It was survival...”

Do you remember the scene in “Titanic” where the lady in one of the lifeboats was castigating at the crew to go back and pick up survivors in the water, and the officer told her they’d be swamped if they went into the pack of floating people - and he’d throw her overboard if she didn’t shut up...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCMfjbNn-_8

Similar mentality... choosing who lives and who dies, in the Titanic case, by simply doing nothing, as opposed to actively chucking people out of the boat.

And in reality, I can see it. You have to wonder how many times something like that DID actually happen.

Lord of the Flies freaked me out when I was a kid. We read it as an assignment in freshman year in HS.

And that would have happened, so to make it sound immoral (true or not I dont know) they added that the life-rafts were under capacity, that they kept average passengers locked down till the rich first class ticket holders got away which I think was true(you just gotta hate those 1%ers LOL), leaving lots of spare room

My granda was 7 when it happened living on a farm in PA (very poor)and her hobby has collecting trivia on it likes books and articles as it was a great interest at the time.

By 1999 when it came on HBO in her house she was beyond enjoying it mentally, at 94,because of a stroke.

On Abandon ship they were eventually picked up by a passing ship, so they didnt have to row all the way to Africa hundreds of miles, but itwas after survivng a real bad storm.i

So kicking the weaker ones out did probably save their lives the way the plot was written

I only read Lord Of Flies after seeing the movie.
Recalling Childhood I can see that happening, kids left to themselves are natural savages/

Very sorry to hear that SOL... Grandmoms are our angels. I miss mine terribly. Lost her in 1995 at 87.

RE immoral: Yeah, I caught that too. Typical liberal Hollywood bullsh*t.

I didn't know that either.

Imagine Ashton Kutcher fighting the Taliban or Saddam. Stopped laughing yet?

Any of you guys seen "36 hours"? In it James Garner is conned by the Nazis into thinking the war has been over for years so he gives up info. Any good? I remember my dad telling me about it once.

“...Imagine Ashton Kutcher fighting the Taliban or Saddam. ...”

I can’t.

For that matter, imagine ANY of this current crop of burnouts storming Sugar Loaf on Okinawa, or Betio on Tarawa... or Suribachi on Iwo Jima.... or holding the line in the early hours of the Ardennes, December, 1944... or coming ashore in the first and second waves at Omaha... or parachuting into Normandy in the dead of night... Holland, in broad daylight.... Germany, in broad daylight, with the damned Germans DUG IN on the landing and drop zones...

Or pushing Rommel back at El Guettar, or El Alamein, or Sidi Barrani... or struggling to get off the beach at Anzio.

You Can’t. It isn’t there.

When I think about it, guys like my old man and my uncles - that whole generation - were all Depression-hardened street kids from North Philly and from a hundred thousand other towns and cities all across the country.

They grew up tough, mean, and with barely anything. Dad was one of 9; a set of twins died early on.

That’s what won WWII and Korea (yeah, not a “win” per se, but the people of South Korea would probably differ).

You don’t have that level of hardass today among the majority population.

The guys that are overseas now are exceptional and amazing. But the society in general has been softened by years of good living - brought about mainly BECAUSE of what the WWII guys accomplished.

Just my 2 cents.

Is it normal that a generation that had to work hard, go through very hard times is followed a generation or two later by a spoiled lazy brats generation?

Hasn’t the same thing happened in Europe?

You mentioned South Korea. 30 or 40 years ago, South Korea was a poor country. In one generation they built it into a modern, wealthy democratic country.

Now they got a generation full of “Prince” and “Princess” syndrome, obsessions with celebrities, a high suicide rate, a major and growing “gimme” movement.

In another 8-10 years -if my unformed theory is correct- I would fully expect a stagnant South Korea to become a welfare state with a line of presidents elected on “hope and change” and promises of free stuff.

I certainly hope no. It is the last foreign location I still want to visit. Once upon a time I wanted to visit London but now its no longer an English city, so I gave that up.

It IS when you have an active, subversive fifth column working at all levels of government, academia, and even the most mundane parts of everyday life, destroying and undermining the larger culture.

We’ve had these leftist bastards here for a long time, messing with young peoples’ minds.

SOuth Korea is the same; don’t think for a moment they haven’t had operatives from their Democrat northern neighbor infiltrating through their society and undermining it.

The difference is - when the South Koreans catch them, they disappear. Here, they get elected as Democrats and RINOs.

lol

It is moving slower in South Korea but it is moving in the same direction it seems. They now have free school lunches for everyone and a growing welfare system (I know, sounds pretty minor but it is heading in that direction)

In a country with such a close commie neighbor always threatening them, you would think this movement might be a bit more slowed. And it is I guess.

Still, I like their TV shows online and I like sites like DailyNK keeping track of North Korea. I have slowly slowly been learning some Korean too.

MEGA Ping reply PING!

The America of then was the real America. Just using this tiny sample set, which includes known die hard liberals, they all served their country. Completely different world now. In fact, I saw HBO is making a Cassius Clay flick about him not going into the military when drafted. I’m SURE he’ll be portrayed as the hero, the evil white men oppressors as villains, no doubt about that. Like I said before, color over country.

Speaking of color over country, the loons are pissed off that the 2 finalists for the mayor of Boston are white, Irish hacks. It’s not enough that they are uber-leftists, they ain’t “diverse”. I’ll stop there.

RE: Titanic and other movies. Just imagine the sh*tshow that would be today. “I’m a Kenyan-American, an underrepresented ‘class’ who’s on every type of public ‘assistance’ possible (under different names of course). Oh, and I’m a transgendered (via public funds) lesbian that has a dedicated life partner waiting for me. I’m better than you crackers, outta my way!”

The list goes on from there...

RE: Porn. Try as they will; you can’t change primal human natures.

RE: Cory Booker. He’s a rump ranger.

RE: “36 hours”. I caught the last ~40 minutes of it ~6-ish years ago. Very good! I wish I had caught the whole thing.

RE: WW2 guys. As good to great as most of them are/were, they did spawn the generation that screwed the country up. SOME of them are culpable in that.

And a quick sports note. Has anyone else had enough of the Mariano Rivera farewell tour? It’s been going on FOR A YEAR. ENOUGH!!!

It's Always been my observation the closer to danger you are the less stupid you are allowed to be.

Like Israel and South Korea, you liberal up and Pansy up too much and your enemeis who don't share your pity remorse or fear WILL take advantage of that.

If I recall Correctly the West Germans didn't mess around at all when dealing with East German Moles and Spies. Because it was "Danger Close"

Because our enemies don't blatantly disrupt our daily lives here in America, the stupidity factor has increased exponentially, leading to disastrous consequences.

That is why the most Conservative People I know come from Easter Europe, they HATE leftists, HATE them, because they lived their dream.

If everyone had their experiences the Socialists in this country would be reduces to a few wack jobs meeting in a basement.

; you can’t change primal human nature

Yes you can. Marriage did that. It helped create civilization. Civilization changed primal human nature too, we invented things and learned things and passed on this knowledge to others and to future generations.

We stopped being animals. We started expected and desiring neighbors who were not animals.

Looks like we are headed backwards now
