Milk is iffy, in our experience. I'll get a whiff of sourness - almost always - by the second day following "best by"....and sometimes several days before.

I'm guessing it's pre-purchase transit/storage variations.

That’s why I buy ultra-pasteurized milk - it costs more but keeps longer. The overall cost for me is less.
