It looks like this guy spent some quality time at the range. It obviously paid off.

I see this kind of comment often when someone kills an intruder in his home. Perhaps you can explain to me why one needs "range time" when the attacker is a couple feet away.

That is easy. I have received 25 straight years of on the job firearms training, with the Mini 14, 38 caliber revolver, Remington 870 12 gauge and 40 mm single and multiple launcher. I have never been in a gun fight, but my instructors, for 25 years, always said, in an emergency, you would be amazed at how badly you can miss, even at short range. This is what I was always told, in firearms training. They also said, that in an emergency, most people (not all) simply only react, not necessarily think, and you tend to revert back to your training. I hope that helps you gain more insight into it. The fact that the chump was hit numerous times, might indicate the guy had some training.
