Visibly angry and at times raising their voices, House Democrats slammed Republicans for sending Washington into shutdown mode.
A last-minute move by the House GOP to seek a conference with the Senate on a continuing resolution ensured that the government shut down early Tuesday.
What the speaker is doing is doubling and tripling down [on] a path that it was always intended to take us to shutting down government, Pelosi said. They have wiggled this way and that to keep being very resourceful to come up with ways to shut down government. Because as [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid said, they dont believe in government. Theyre anti-government idealoges.
Pelosi said it wasnt just about Obamacare.
This is bigger than the Affordable Care Act, she said. This is their way of saying were going to have a new order here.
She referred to a quote by George Washington, in which he warned against a political party at war with its country.
This is a proxy fight for really the debate on the extent of government and that has been a debate in the history of our country, Pelosi said. But to say no government, thats what President Washington cautioned against.
Pelosi said shes still willing to work with others.
This is about Congress doing its job, Pelosi said. What I said to the president and what I said to the speaker and Ive said to the chamber, we extend a hand of friendship.
Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), the vice chair of the Democratic caucus, voice got louder as he spoke, asking first, Is anyone surprised? This has been their plan all along.
The American taxpayers continue to pay taxes to this country and theyre going to get less for it, Crowley shouted. Its outragous that we would play these types of games with the American people. Its about the health and safety of our country and the Republican caucus is letting this country down.
Pelosi lashed out at one point when a reporter asked whether she could support a measure that would eliminate federal contributions for lawmakers and congressional staffers for health insurance, members and other political appointees who are moved into the health care exchanges.
No, Pelosi said shaking her head. Then she interrupted Hoyer, who called the issue of contributions a distraction, not real instead of talking about funding government.
You know what else? Pelosi said. Theyre fakers. They want that to not prevail because it harms them but they want us to vote against it over and over again.
Hoyer launched into a tirade about problems with the Republican caucus. He pointed to former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who oversaw the last government shutdown. Gingrich cautioned his perfectionist caucus that compromise was needed.
Newt Gingrich was right then, Hoyer said. John Bohner ought to follow his advice now.
Pelosi then interjected, No, his advice now is not so good.
" ... They just want to embarrass our president..."
Holy carp! Guilty as hell!
Well, you got the eye-gouging homeliness down and the agenda-driven commie-fellating prattle. You're just about there, Ginge!
Henceforth, Politico shall be known as The Pound.
Because we work for a living, feed ourselves, house ourselves, pay in cash, and have saved for a rainy day, we aren’t going to be affected by this shutdown for a long time. I may start a popcorn concession outside of the country welfare building when this is over. There is going to be a long line of people waiting to catch up on all their free money.
Only the Democrat Senate can shut the government down. They can moan and groan all they want but if it shuts down, they did it.
Yep
lol, nawww Harry, I just want to be able to buy the light bulb I want! Shut the dang thing down, for a very very very long time.
Such screeching, really wins people over!
Having a blast on twitter tonight/this morning.
Excuse me but Republican’s did NOT send Washington into a shutdown, the demodummies in the Senate had their chance to “compromise” and failed to do so, THUS shutting down the gubmint. Distort the truth all they want but the truth is the truth.
The press is in full blame game mode and they will always blame the republicans.....and they are nasty about it...fowl-mouthed and crude.
For them it’s not about Obamacare...it’s ALL about their boy Obama. As Reid said last night...they just want to embarrass ‘our’ President....Note the ownership in his choice of words.
I called my do nothing Congressman and thanked him for the stand of the Republicans. I shouldn’t call just when I am complaining, huh?
Please, dude: people are trying to eat.
See Nancy, the trouble is, when you lie all the time, eventually people stop paying attention.
Heard on the radio that Boehner said he couldn't pass a CR funding Cubacare, because he doesn't have the votes.
The House elephants are only beholden to their district voters. Why should they commit suicide for Boehner?
I'm sure SEIU is digging through the NSA archives right about now.
