Bankrupting America Launches Web Ad Highlighting Congress’ Hypocrisy in Affordable Care Act

Bankrupting America, a project of Public Notice, today launched a new national online advertising campaign highlighting Congress’ hypocrisy in its decision to protect itself from higher healthcare costs resulting from the Affordable Care Act. The ad, titled “Inconvenient,” uses simple, stick-figure style animation to educate and engage the audience and make the case for fairness in Washington.

When the Affordable Care Act was passed, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, inserted an amendment that would require members of Congress and their staff to join the exchanges, with the point being that Washington should live under the laws they pass. But fearing the skyrocketing healthcare premiums many Americans will face in statewide health care exchanges would lead to a “brain drain” on Capitol Hill as staffers exit, Congress managed to secure special treatment, protecting themselves from higher costs.

“By now everyone has figured out that the Affordable Care Act isn’t so affordable, except for Congress, which will receive special treatment instead of actually living with the law it passed,” said Public Notice Executive Director Gretchen Hamel. “We elected our leaders in Washington to represent us and our best interests, but right now it appears they’re only concerned about their own pocketbooks. Americans will pay the price for this ill-conceived law and deserve to know whether their representatives will as well.”

They get subsidies to cover their staffers.

Next session they’ll probably vote themselves raises as well.

The Nomenklatura always win.

Their salaries are on autopilot, an outrageous violation of the spirit of the 27th amendment. No need for an embarrassing vote.
