AQ is where our fearless leader wants it to be. He never wanted it weakened. He has never condemned the brutality of this or other jihadi groups.

But he put a man in jail for having something to do with a stupid video critical of the ideology that inspires AQ and other jihadis.

I would argue that the the Growth of AQ can be viewed in a much larger context that is not Americentric.

The growth of AQ can be viewed as coalescence of fundamentalist Moslems from disparate locations to solidify their goals and actions all across Islam.

Recall if you will the beginning. Usama Bin Ladin was a very well educated son of a prosperous construction owning family. He was dissatisfied with the change he perceived in process all around him.

Saudi Arabia was emerging from the dark ages. All the Gulf was emerging from the dark ages. There was change, totally unacceptable change. He expressed his views and was disowned by his family. Usama was bad for the business of getting wealthy in the Jeddah building boom. The building boom was largely associated with the Haj. That is, taking care of the hordes of the faithful who were mandated by one of the Five Pillars of Islam to make the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca and the Holy places.

The Haj was becoming a way to get rich while losing the intense religious fervor. Everyone could become a Hajji. The process was sinful in all respects. The need to take good care of the pilgrims meant money for the coffers of the locals that were charged with taking care of them. The money changers were in the Temple.

Usama Bin Ladin took his inheritance and left. He found and recruited others that were opposed to the change all about them. They perceived the west as the agent of change and fretted about how to damage the west and save Islam.... fundamentalist, evangelical, radical Islam.

New York became the fixation because it is the center of all that is bad. New York is in fact the Great Satan. Even American Christians disdain the sinful nature of New York and it’s worship of the liberal utopia. New York is in fact sin city, the seat of liberalism and the sinful secularism turning from God. New York is also the largest concentration of Jews. New York became the focus for saving fundamentalist Islam. New York was the bugaboo needed to raise money.

While attacking the west and New York in particular is a strategy, the primary reason for being has not changed. The primary reason is not killing Americans but restoring Islam to some fundamentalist Islamic state of the past. The takeover and control of Islam is the goal of AQ and the other coalescing groups.

In addition to AQ wanting control of the Holy Places, there are others. The biggest and strongest are the mullahs in Iran. They also desire control over Islam and covet Mecca. They covet the oil and increasingly, they covet and disdain the wealth of the UAE and especially Dubai.

The rabble rousing is resulting in the noted coalescence. The rabble is quick to anger and thus engage in all sorts of mayhem directed by cynical leaders. We see the results of the cynicism all over.

The efforts however are not successful. There is virtually no gain in the Gulf. In fact, the trend is the opposite. In Egypt, the effort was overturned and the leadership destroyed. In Syria, there is strong effort of Moderate Islam directed by the Gulf and Turkey to upset the cozy relation with Hamas and Hezbollah.

There is no success of note in the East, Indonesia, Maylasia, Singapore.

In summary,AQ is losing

With a Saudi-boot-licking, Wahhabi muslim in the white house, what other outcome would you expect?

Not surprising given that 0bama’s muzzie Faith makes him support the fellow traveler MuzzieBroz.

When Obama got elected in 2008, one of his first international calls was to Erdogan of Turkey, who seems to be his good friend. I've been asking myself, how did he get to be introduced to Erdogan and become "good friends" before he came to power? I don't see how he would have had visibility.

The only explanation I can come up with is an MB connection.
