it’s backfiring, even in Asheville, which is Granola Central in North Carolina (probably the most leftist spot in the state, maybe tied with Durham and Chapel Hell).

I'd give Asheville top spot, very closely followed by Chapel Hell and then Raleigh. Durham isn't even in the same league.

I don’t know about that. I lived in Durham for five years. It’s a different kind of leftist. Asheville is loony hippie save-the-whales leftist. Durham is a combination of academic nutball leftist and “gonna get ours now” black-racist kill-whitey leftist.
