Well this appears to be an isolated case and while I feel bad for the couple it is no worse than the private companies on federal land that have gotten the boot. At least the businesses appear to know their rights. Public space belongs to everyone. If you can’t own it you can’t occupy it. They have a right to camp wherever and whenever they want, without a permit. Hopefully these cases will start to get some traction.
I'm sure the voters can make life difficult for the public servants who forgot who they are supposed to serve. One reason for the protections federal employees have by law is that in theory they are non-partisan. If the federal employees, including NPS in particular, are shown to be just a partisan arm of the current administration, then they should, for example, be able to be fired by a new administration.
No doubt the voters can elect representatives who will change the laws governing the relationship between the federal employees and the rest of the public. In fact this shutdown was caused in part by the unwillingness of congressional staff members to be subject to the same health care mandate as everyone else.
Federal employees who implement partisan policies to "make life as difficult as we can" for the public shouldn't be surprised when the voters decide that they'd like to make the life of the federal employees a little less pleasant. After all, what better way is there to reduce our deficit than reducing the federal payroll and retirement costs?

You folks need to step back. Nation land, parks, wildlife refuges, et al, belong to me, to you, and to all. They do NOT belong to your p_Resident. You do not have to obey unlawful orders. As a matter of fact, you have a duty to resist such orders.
You do know that Hitler’s Brownshirts were “just following orders”....
Cheers,
Rob Sermon
Somebody will pay for this...
And now every potential looter will be lining up for the couple’s possessions.
"I was just following orders"...Nuremberg defendant.
I find that very alarming, these 'rangers' have so little integrity they would actually follow these orders.
What happened to the 'sick out'.
They sure are spending a lot of extra money for a shutdown.
He can instruct as many many of his minions as he wants to inflict as much pain on the American people as possible, but face it, “nonessential” means what it says. Many people in Obama's economy don't have money to spend on things that are "nonessential". Welcome to the club.
I just saw a story about Cumberland Island National Seashore on CBS Sunday Morning where it seems a descendant of the granting family, the Carnegies, still lives on the island, working as an artist. Makes me wonder if she was made to leave the island.
Most upper management rangers live inside the parks. I don’t see any of them getting kicked out. I also don’t see the Obama tribe moving out of MY house to a Motel 6 this week.
Are these the people who live(d) on a boat?
Just beneath the 7th Circle of Hell, I hope, and soon.
I'll wager it never crossed that "unnamed park rangers'" little mind to call in sick.
This is for real ? Its not satire ?
This should apply to the White House as well. It sits on federal land too.
