California - Where Illegal Immigrants are Legal

It seems like a lifetime ago when the U.S. Senate passed a bill to revise our immigration laws. The bill -- which was touted by some as the cure to our immigration problems -- went to the House of Representatives and died. The House stated they wanted to deal with the issue in pieces and not have another monster bill like Obamacare or Dodd-Frank, each of which have massive unintended consequences. Without federal action, California is stepping into the breach to resolve the issue for all Americans.

This column previously wrote that to make any progress on immigration, two truths would have to be accepted: First, there would have to be legitimate enforcement of our borders with a real fence along the southern border. Second, that we would have to deal with the estimated eleven million illegal immigrants within our borders, and kicking them out was not a solution. Well, the leaders of California have taken hold of the second part while ignoring the first. .

It starts with the fact that the California Legislature passed a bill that would allow an estimated 1.4 illegal immigrants to obtain California driver’s licenses. Though California was not the first state to pass this law, it certainly is the most significant. The law provides for a change in procedures that would eliminate the need to have a social security number. The law states that an applicant for a driver’s license will no longer have to provide proof that they are legally in the United States to obtain a license.

The first ramification of this is that the law specifically requires that the license be separately identified. But the law then states: “it is a violation of law to discriminate against an individual because he or she holds or presents a license issued under these provisions.” That means if you are an employer in the state of California you must treat an illegal immigrant with a driver’s license just like an American citizen.

The counterpoint to this is the federal government just started a new crackdown on employers in states like California with large immigrant populations. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is warning employers they can be hit with strong civil penalties for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. But, if the employer in California discriminates against illegal immigrants, they are subject to civil damages. Talk about can’t win for losing.

As previously stated, our biggest objection is that now that these licenses will be issued they will be used for voter registration identification. The law specifically forbids the use of the licenses for registration, as stated: “Does not establish eligibility for employment, voter registration or public benefits.” We called Assemblyman Luis Alejo, principal author of the bill, to ask him about that.

We spoke with his Chief of Staff, Marva Diaz, regarding the use of the ID for voter registration. After she pointed out the letter of the law, we asked her if she had ever done voter registration. She replied “I refuse to answer that question.” We asked if there was any enforcement against using the licenses given illegal immigrants as identification, to which she replied “I refuse to answer that.” She then said “If you have questions regarding voter registration, you should speak to the Secretary of State.”

We have done voter registration and there is no doubt there will be people who will look at the special designation for licenses to illegals and will not allow them to register. But there will be two other groups of registrars. The first will be the individuals who just are not paying attention or don’t care. Then there will be groups like La Raza who will purposefully use the licenses as a means to register voters. The registration will be processed and no one will stop them. Poof, we have 1.4 million new voters; not one of whom is a United States citizen.

Remarkably, our friends in California are brewing up other ways to give illegal immigrants new rights. Sergio Garcia has passed the bar exam, but he has not obtained legal status in the U.S. The California Supreme Court will soon decide whether the Lawyer’s Bar should issue him a license to practice in California. That will define a new understanding of a lawyer’s obligation to follow the law.

In another action, the legislature passed a bill to allow legal permanent residents to serve on juries. The bill is now on Governor Brown’s desk. The Governor has already signed a bill allowing legal permanent residents to serve as poll watchers. The jury bill would be the first in the U.S. to allow noncitizens to sit on juries. It would certainly redefine “A jury of your peers.”

These continued onslaughts against the rights and obligations of citizens come with a purpose. There are people who believe borders are arbitrary lines established by unsupported governments. They think people should be allowed to live wherever they feel that’s right for them.

Unfortunately, we are allowing the people who want to degrade the citizenship rights of Americans to win the argument. As shown by the Leftist leaders of California, they will take matters into their own hands if Congress does not act. It is time for Congress to take back the immigration laws of this country and stop these scattered shots at our rights.

This is EXACTLY why California will never turn red again.

Might as well hand it over to Mexico because it will never be part of America again.

First....if you are not committed to deporting all Illegal Aliens ....you support Amnesty

I’m so tired of folks claiming to be tough on borders and illegals...but refuse to deport. No deportation of Illegal Aliens is Amnesty

“It is time for Congress to take back the immigration laws of this country and stop these scattered shots at our rights.”

Perhaps but there are a few reasons it will not happen. First, they are working AGAINST immigration laws, no matter what they say. Second, once no one in the Congress even cared whether we have an actual citizen as President, why would they bother with those who elect him.

In 1938 Hitler claimed he wanted the sudaten (sp?) land. The world gave it to him. Now Mexico wants California back, along with Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and except for two of those states, no one cares a bit. Frankly, just like the allies had to push back the Nazis out of France, Italy, Poland et al, it is time for the other states to push back the illegal hordes out of the aformention states even if needed be done at the point of a bayonette. If not, we have no country, just a new name for what was the US; Hacienda North America.

Time to go get that illegal alien drive’s license! No need being an American and paying taxes or obeying the law anymore. And, no, I am not kidding. Hell, I can even go to law school paid for by the government AND practice law without even needing to be a citizen.

There are about 40 million illegals here in this country and for every 5 that are deported 10 sneak back in again. So it's an ongoing problem Plus terrorist sneak in with them through the tunnels.

We need to enforce the borders and building walls and fences that they can not climb over would help

Being a traditionalist, I prefer the term “illegal alien.” “Immigrant” implies having a right to be here.

California has never required any form of proof of identity, citizenship or residency to register to vote, vote at the polls, or request or cast an absentee ballot. If anything, this law will make it easier to identify non-citizens who attempt to register or vote, because the illegal alien license records are flagged and can be compared to the voter registration and voting rolls. This is not to say that anyone will actually do this, but at least it is possible.

More generally, people talking about this as the last straw for California have it wrong. The Latino-majority working class heavily taxing the white-and-Asian-majority millionaire class has been the rule of California for quite some time, and adding more Latino working class people to the electorate doesn't change the equation. As long as white and Asian millionaires will pay the taxes in order to enjoy the weather or (in the case of entertainment and tech) be close to their industry's critical mass, the situation will continue to work. Once they won't pay the taxes and move in significant numbers, the situation collapses, regardless of who has majorities in the electorate or Legislature.

Note to the author:

In Calif in the 70’s & the 80’s, the number of illegals in the country was pegged at 20 million and no one ever challenged that number.

In the 30+++ years since, the number of illegals coming to America for ‘births on our soil’ have been non-stop. The births of those families who were already counted in the 20 million haven’t slacked off, either.

Now, the successive generations of those 20 million are also producing births at a much high rate than white Americans.

Add to the above the astonishing number of illegals who continued to cross our non-existant border and are criminals by reputation & nature who also are breeding at a much faster rate.

Now—TRY to tell me that mathematically we have only 11 million illegals in the USA.

It just doesn’t add up.

I believe the actual and factual number is much closer to 55 million. That is one illegal for every 6 Americans.!!!

I am not even including those who came from other countries on visas & school allowances.

When will we learn the correct number of the illegals?

When they have been granted amnesty & have had the red carpet rolled out for them-—over the writhing bodies of taxpayers who were BORN here.

It is all just plain WRONG.

“. . . and kicking them out was not a solution.”

I stop reading right there.

There is no empirical evidence that enforcement and deportation won’t work. It’s never been tried.

Deportations and jailing employers of illegals will end the practice quickly and make the uncaught illegals decide that going home voluntarily is better than getting arrested and deported.

George Will, now pedaling his same old gibberish on Fox, makes the snarky observation that it would take a bus convoy 1700 miles long to deport the 11 million illegals. OK, Mr. Will, refresh my memory on when a similar 1700 mile long convoy brought them here in the first place.

There wasn’t? They did it on their own? See a problem here Georgie boy, settled in your northwest Washington home where illegals are banned from showing up unless it’s the lawncare service for his $2,000,000 home?

California is now fine with voter id laws.

1. Illegal gets a drivers license.
2. Illegal shows drivers license at voting location.
3. Illegal votes.
4. Illegal gets back on Dem Party bus and along with the rest of the packed bus, goes to next precinct to vote again?

So California stays a solid Dem State, courtesy of massive Dem vote fraud. Dem Party is more than comfortable with vote fraud, lies and deception...just like any other corrupt organization...

And when fraud is not enough to win elections, there is always the good ol’buy the votes routine via taxpayer-extorted handouts.

Mexico and other semi-3rd world countries have more honest elections than the corrupt USSA.

Well, before the amnesty push, you would hear the media saying 11 to 30 million illegals. Now, only the 11 million number. 30 million is probably on the low side.

Here in California, the hispanics have pretty much become a majority. Nearby city of about 180,000 is now a Mex city. Does have some whites and others. Definite minority now.

Young to middle aged Mexican women...seem to go for large families here. Nice weather. Free stuff. Work for cash, under the table. What’s not to like?

Got to say one thing in their favor. They tend to work fairly hard much of the time. Local Home Depot, always have Mexicans near the entrance looking for work. Always have a few whites farther away, near entrance panhandling the cars for money. No pride there. In appearance, the panhandlers look like Dem Party voters.
