Active list of closed roads in Louisville due to flooding
WHAS 11 News ^ | October 6, 2013 | staff

With almost six inches of rain over the last 24 hours there were many evacuations and rescues from the flooding. Fire and Rescue units report 250 assists (temporary assistance from one place to another) and 12 rescues (involves boats and other equipment to extricate from high water) from the flooding with 84 evacuations.

The American Red Cross continues to keep their shelter open at Atherton High School and Greater Faith Missionary Church is also assisting the community with a shelter.

With 1000 calls made into MetroSafe from 10pm until 2am our volume has dropped to less than half of that number since 2am to present.

We encourage members of Metro Louisville to sign-up for our community notification system, CodeRed, at www.louisvilleky.gov to stay informed about any warnings that may continue throughout the day.

We will continue to monitor the weather situation throughout the day with our public safety constituents and will advise of any changes.

Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or ear flood waters. Why? The main reason is people underestimate the force and power of water. Many of the deaths occur in automobiles as they are swept downstream. Of these drownings, many are preventable, but too many people continue to drive around the barriers that warn you the road is flooded. Remember TADD-TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN

TOPICS: News/Current Events; US: Kentucky
KEYWORDS: flooding; storm; weather
Most of this rain fell in less than twelve hours; from noon to midnight yesterday.

If any fellow FReepers are heading to the Louisville area today, take your time and be careful.

I always feel for those who are adversely affected by too much water. They can be glad they don’t live on the Gulf Coast - a few years ago, we had a week that was book-ended by two 12” thunderstorms which each dropped a foot in about a 12 hour period. While not “common”, 6” is not a rare event either.
