Across North Carolina, thousands of people have been shocked in recent weeks to find out their health insurance plans will be canceled at the end of the year and premiums for comparable coverage could increase sharply.
One of them is George Schwab of Charlotte, who pays $228 a month for his familys $10,000 deductible plan from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
In a Sept. 23 letter, Blue Cross notified him that his current plan doesnt meet benefit requirements outlined in the Affordable Care Act and suggested a comparable plan for $1,208 a month $980 more than he now pays.
Im 62 and retired, Schwab said. This creates a tremendous financial burden for our family.
The President told the American people numerous times that If you like your coverage, you can keep it, Schwab said. How can we keep it if it has been eliminated? How can we keep it if the premium has been increased 430 percent in one year?
Schwab and others who purchase insurance individually, and not through employer-sponsored group plans, are finding that the Affordable Care Act may be unaffordable for their families.
The new law, which rolled out to consumers this week with the opening of the online insurance marketplace, requires most Americans to buy insurance or pay a fine. It also sets minimum standards for health benefits and prohibits insurers from excluding or charging higher premiums for people who have pre-existing medical conditions.
Theres good and bad in the law, said Chris Blount, a Blue Cross agent wth Piedmont Benefits Group in Charlotte. I think its bad that we cant have as many choices as weve had before. But its not like youre having to pay more and getting less. Youre having to pay more, and youre getting more.

Romney did not invent Federalized health care.
He signed a state bill that MA voters wanted.
Whether you want it to happen or not won’t change a thing.
I won't have to pay more. Obama promised *me* that I'd save $2500/year! I'm still trying to figure out where all I'm going to be spending all my new "Obama money"!!! :) </sarcasm>
“We have to pass the law so we can see what’s in it...” - Nancy “Scarecrow” Pelosi
Guess the peasants are finding out now, huh Nancy?
Silly little Proles.
Obamacare is needed because people with pre-existing conditions cannot get insurance and desperately ill insured citizens are subject to lifetime caps on what their policies will pay. These people end up filing bankruptcy because they cannot pay their medical bills. The ONLY fair solution is for every other hard working family out there to have to file bankruptcy too.
Which is how Obama campaigned, saying his plan would be voluntary. It just does demonstrate how alike Obama and Romney are in their views and attitude.
Isn't a corporate raider the elite's rendition of street thug?
He should have explained to them why it was a bad idea and refused to sign it.
That's referred to as Leadership.
When you take a thousand dollars from each family
times 100 million families, you have removed 300 billion dollars of
discretionary spending from the economy. The economy will collapse.
Obamacare is economic suicide.
He got it figgerd out.
You really think that people in MA did NOT want socialized medicine? You think they wanted voluntary? It's one of the most leftist places...of course they were clamoring for a state mandated solution.
I guess that means that Obama is justified in his dictatorial actions.
Leader decides what's best...voters be damned.

And yet, instead of looking themselves in the mirror and finally admitting that fielding lousy, crappy RINO candidates, election after election after election, is a guaranteed loser proposition, they continue to blame conservatives for their losses. Crazy, ain't it?
I never understood how abusing your base won you votes...

I call it bait and switch. I noticed blue cross went nutso on their increases and rotten benefits. I think I will change to aetne. Better coverage.
Ya know these first premiums are going to come due around the end of December, merry Christmas to all.
Are you having to cover pediatric dental and vision too? All the policies I have looked at has that plus contraceptive coverage. Does it cover my thyroid medicine...nah, that’s part of my 6250 deductible.
In the cities, sure. But rural and a lot of suburban MA, not so much. The people pride themselves on Town Hall meetings to decide local issues, when the tornados hit last year towns had plans to take care of themselves, and there's a very strong feeling for property rights. The concept of individual freedom and opportunity, though being extinguished, is part of that Yankee tradition.
MA is more complex than just being loony liberal.
>>Yes, for just $1000 more per month, this 62 year-old retired man can now enjoy the benefits of maternity coverage.<<
No, for just $1000 more per month, this 62 year-old retired man is paying for some parasite who has never held a job in her life, can now enjoy the benefits of maternity coverage.
Barry, Harry and Nancy said we were all going to “love” ObamaCare and it was going to be “really popular”. I knew all along they were lying. That’s what they do.
