In this land of ranchers, bikers and other rednecks, they shoot out tires or use stop-strips-even in our tiny towns and communities at festivals and events where the streets and sidewalks are packed with people-insane drivers are subdued and carted off for a cell visit and a call to a lawyer, and I’ve never heard that anyone was hit by a flying anything in the fracas-good aim, I guess.

There have been one or two wrongful death-by-cop incidents-but not in several years. The county and the former LEOs involved have paid/are still paying on the multi-million dollar settlements, the only town with a PD fired its entire police department and went to a city marshal instead, and the county started hiring more vets who did tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and know a “real” threat as opposed to something else-it has been a great improvement.

Maybe we’re just a bunch of dumb rednecks, but the lesson learned was to look before you leap-or shoot. I think DC might have something to learn from them...

I hear what you're saying, and I agree...up to a point. This driver drove herself and a small child from Connecticut to DC and proceeded to do things that caused her to be regarded as a serious danger. There was no time to ponder and study and interview family members. This driver was hell-bent on causing trouble, possibly killing many people in the process. I am not saying that the police did the right thing, but I am saying that the driver made wrong choices over and over, leaving the police little choice but to stop her with as little loss of life as possible.

One life was lost, but her child's life was saved, as were the lives of all the other motorists and bystanders. Again, if she had been transporting explosives and had taken out a large group of people in a nearby building, I doubt we would be standing around now wringing out hands over the driver's purported mental state.

We either live in the same town or yours is not the only one. It was lovely here during the 6 months or so that we had no police. Now they are back ticketing people left and right to refill the county coffers.
