I recently read a hundred-page book by a wonderful American historian who passed away nearly 50 years ago. His name was Will Durant and he wrote many books. He wrote an eleven volume history of civilization, but at the end of his life, he wrote a hundred-page book, The Lessons of History. You should read it. Every line is carved from the stone of truth, and I will give you the bad news and the good news. The bad news is that when you finish reading this book, you understand that in history, greater numbers rule. They matter. But here is the good news. On page 17, if I am not mistaken, he mentions that there may be exceptions to this rule and that through the unification of a cultural force, that's what he called it, the odds could be overcome. He gives the State of Israel as an example of such an exception. I think that we have proven in the 65 years of Israel's existence that we are exceptional, but we must continue to be so, also by preserving our spiritual foundations.
Two weeks ago, archaeologists found a gold medallion near the Western Wall. The archaeologists dated it to the beginning of the seventh century and there is a menorah on the medallion – our national symbol. On one side, a Torah scroll and on the other a shofar. The entire Torah on one medallion and of course, this was after 2,000 years of Jewish existence in the Land of Israel. This existence has lasted for nearly 4,000 years....

I have a friend born back in the twenties. He has a NYT front page from the day he was born. The main headline is about Arabs and Jews killing each other in what was the British protectorate that is now Israel.
The Jews came to settle and were outnumbered and outgunned by the Arabs (not yet called “Palestinians”).
The Arabs initiated riots (then called "revolts", now, "intifadas") many times, (1921, 1929, 1936-39) slaughtering Jewish men, women and children.
The League of Nations and then the UN tried to settle the issues with resolutions and Commissions, the Arabs REJECTED EVERY COMPROMISE, the Jews accepted.
It took time, but the Jews set up militias to DEFEND themselves against marauding Arabs. These militias were called “HaShomair”, the Guard.
By the mid-1930’s the Jews saw storm clouds gathering in Europe. They asked the British to let in more Jewish refugees. The Arabs rejected this utterly, the British (then as now) caved into Arab pressure). The Jews died in Europe.
The Jews formed the HAGANAH (Defense), STERN GANG, ETZEL GANG to stop Arab attacks while STERN and ETZEL took a more aggressive approach, attacking British Forces in Mandate Palestine.
Mind you, the Jews volunteered to fight with the British against the Nazis forming the “Jewish Brigade”. The Arabs helped the Axis powers.
Those headlines are appropriate for our era as well but the Jews were never looking for a fight, the Arabs were looking and still are. Look at what the Arabs do to Arabs, just for fun - they slaughter each other for lunch.
Can you reason or compromise? Maybe but along the way you'll be DEFENDING your life due to no choice on the part of the Jews.

Hagana is Tzahal, or Tzva Hagana Leumi. On the eve of independence, the Etzel, or Irgun Tzva Leumi, and “Stern Gang,” more properly known as Lehi for Lohamei Herut Yisrael, merged into Tzahal and formed one organization. Originally, Etzel was Tzahal, but broke away from it because Yaakov Meridor and company perceived the British as the enemy, especially after the sinking of the Struma. But they didn’t become a truly effective fighting force against the British until 1944, when Menahem Begin assumed the leadership. Lehi became known as the “Stern Gang” because of its leader, Moshe Stern, a very daring, swashbuckly sort of guy, who was eventually captured by the British unarmed, and killed in captivity, causing the infuriated Sternists to become the most fanatically militant of the three. They were the ones responsible for the assassination of Lord Moynh (sp?). In addition to fighting Arabs or British, all three organizations were also involved with smuggling in Jewish refugees from Europe, running the British blockade and providing false identities to the ma’pilim.

As far as I know Hagana was Hagana. It was the predecessor of The IDF (Israel Defense Forces or the acronym ZH”L)
Tzahal stands for Tzva Hahagana L’Yisrael

Yes, and so was the Hagana, only called Hagana for short. Upon the 1948 declaration, Lehi and Etzel merged with the Hagana into Tzahal, so as to eliminate all the internecine squabbling, and win the imminent war. It didn’t work, according to Begin’s Revolt!. The Hagana faction of Tzahal in many instances stiffed the Etzel and Lehi-nicks on the battlefield in terms of manpower and supplies, and actually destroyed munitions being brought in on the Altelena, mistakenly believing the Irgun was attempting a hostile takeover. Had the munitions on the Altelena not been destroyed, we could have kept the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, and much more.
Like him or not, Ben Gurion had the foresight to bridge the very Left wing (MAPAI party-Haganah) to the very Right wing (Herut Revisionist party -Irgun-ETZEL-STERN) in order to forge a united, new nation - Israel.
There were seeds of civil war but Jewish leaders knew this was their make or break moment, something they waited for for 2,000 years and they had to (by force) put down any sedition to their authority in order to face the coming Arab onslaught.
The Irgun and Stern were absorbed into the Haganah in order to form the nascent Israel Defense Forces (Tzhahal). It worked.
The UN has been sorry the Jews survived ever since and have done everything in their power to weaken Israel.
The UN is a very sorry organization. The one bit of good they ever did, and they are ashamed of it. But they’re great at standing around and doing nothing while horrible atrocities are happening, and buggering out when their peace keeping missions suddenly turn hot.
