On Capitol Hill today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) delivered a brief statement about the stalled budget negotiations between President Obama and House Republicans in regards to funding the federal government and raising the debt ceiling.
I [am] disappointed that the president refuses to negotiate, he said.
The House has passed four bills, four bills to [fund] our government, he claimed, referring to the numerous piecemeal appropriations bills passed by the House of Representatives to fund essential government services. [Each] of those bills was rejected by the United States Senate.
Dozens of times [in the past] there have been negotiations over funding our government, he continued. He recalled the budget talks between previous administrations and members of Congress -- during the Reagan, Bush and Clinton years, for example -- and how these elected representatives came together and negotiated a settlement. Historically, he added, raising the debt ceiling is the time for the legislative branch to implement significant policy changes. This is precisely what Republicans want to do. He then criticized the president for refusing to even come to the bargaining table.
So the presidents position, [saying] listen, were not going to sit down until you surrender is just not sustainable, he continued. Its not our system of government.
He also explained the seriousness of the debt ceiling fight and why Republicans believe its a cause worth fighting for.
We cant raise the debt ceiling without doing something about whats driving us to borrow more money and live beyond our means, the Speaker intoned. This isnt about me and frankly it isnt about Republicans. This is about saving the future for our grandkids.
[That] conversation ought to start today, he said.
I can’t stand John Boner, but I have to give the man credit today.
His remarks showed Obama for the fool and wanna be tyrant that he is.
Credit where credit is due.
“Sustainable” is a favorite nonsense word used by the greenies. I’m glad to see it thrown back in their face.
Give the Grandkids a “clean”, debt free future.
Good job Boehner! Keep throwing it back at him.
Federal spending is not sustainable.
I am a Social/Moral conservative, then a National Defense one. Fiscal conservatism, is the least important to me (I am NOT saying it is not important...just least important).
Whatever, I was one of those that did not like shutting down the Federal Government...because as Senator Coburn said, I believed the GOP would eventually cave.
However, now that time, money, effort has gone into this impass with a recalcitrant POTUS that will not “negotiate” until he gets his way (when negotiation is no longer possible). I do not see how we can afford to cave to President Obama’s and Reid’s hard line on no compromise or negotiations. IF we cave at this point, then it will all have been for naught and the GOP brand will be severely damaged.
Question to the forum. Since the President, in my opinion, is acting “imperial” like he is just part of the overall picture.....does this make him guilty of an impeachable offense? Could his refusal to dialogue/compromise/negotiate with the House of Representatives be considered a violation of the COTUS’s separation of powers? IF so, then can he be impeached?
Would starting “articles of impeachment” just make him worse (and hurt the GOP), or is it called for?
If Obama brings this down to the wire, I think the Democrap monolith will finally split.
And then the “news” media slammed him with questions they didn’t have the guts to ask the Zero King.
Message to Boehner: Adjourn the House till Jan 2014. Let the Clown and his master Dingy stew for about 90 days. The ‘Rats need the mother of all paddling.
#2 — yes siree. You’ve summed it up just right for many of us.
Very well said
Obama tried to use buying a house as an analogy. He showed his stupidity. According to the way he’s operating if he wants $200,000 for his house, you’re supposed to agree to pay him $200,000 then he’ll negotiate.
He’s never bought a house. A slum lord gave him one.
I’m not sure Obama will ever cave. He and the dems want a default and a crash. It’s their plan to destroy us. I have to admit there’s a boner between a rock and a hard place.
“House impeaches, Senate convicts. Senate won’t convict.”
That is a given that the Senate will not convict. That was not my question. I wanted to know IF impeachment (inditement) of the POTUS is called for, and would it help or hurt.
Congresswoma Bachmann refered to the President as thikin and acting like he is George III. Can we allow he to do this without taking action...even if it will not result in a conviction? If he is being “imperial”, then I think he is in violation of the COTUS. The power of the POTUS is limited...as are all branches. Can any one be allowed to make a power grab?
This is all theater. I don’t even know anyone who knows anyone who has been affected.
There is that idea—Pass the various appropriations bills separately like it has always been down until 5 years ago, send them over to the senate and enact sine dine. Essentially, just like you said, close down shop till the end of the year.
The ball will then be in the Senate’s court. Great Idea!
“If Obama brings this down to the wire, I think the Democrap monolith will finally split.”
By “split”, do you mean they will cave?
