University of Wyoming president says he'll 'find a way' to help student veterans

University of Wyoming President Bob Sternberg says he will "find a way" to help students whose veterans' benefits may be delayed as a result of the ongoing government shutdown, so no veteran will need to leave their studies because of political gridlock.

Federal agencies have provided enough money to cover veterans' benefits for the remainder of October, but delays are likely if the shutdown continues past Nov. 1, Marty Martinez, project coordinator for UW's Veterans Service Center, said Tuesday.

If those delays should affect whether a student could continue paying for classes at UW, Sternberg said, the university will find a way to help them stay, likely offering grace periods for late payments.

"When I saw that some [veterans] might be in a position where they'd have to temporarily suspend their education, I just felt that that's wrong," Sternberg said.

He said the university will give extra time to any student veteran who cannot pay a bill owed to the school because of delayed federal aid. At this point, Sternberg said, it is unclear how many students' benefits will be affected or how much it could cost the university.

Students such as sophomore Aaron Rousey, 23, depend on federal aid from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help pay for rent, books and tuition. Rousey, an Oklahoma native who graduated high school in Colorado in 2008, served three and a half years in the Army after high school, traveling to Korea, Kansas and Afghanistan before enrolling at UW last fall. He never intended to go to college until he learned his dream job as a wildlife specialist working outdoors would require a college degree, he said.

The VA informed him that the $1,200 stipend he gets each month for housing may arrive late if the government shutdown continues past Nov. 1, he said. His full-time tuition benefits are paid through December under the post-9/11 G.I. Bill, he said, and he already received his $500 stipend for books, which comes at the beginning of each semester.

But rent, he said, is another story.

"At this point, I've already put money aside," Rousey said, noting that not all of his friends have been able to save enough to cover their next month's rent in case the shutdown delays a payment. "I'm just hoping it doesn't happen."

"We're kind of in a wait-and-see," Martinez, the Veterans Service Center project coordinator, said. "We have funds to get us through October, we're just waiting to see what happens after that."

More than 400 veterans are currently students at UW, according to a university release. The university expects to review each veteran’s needs and put together a customized plan to help address each student's immediate financial needs.

Any university president worth his salt should be doing the same thing. Tap into endowments if necessary. Stop paying the most liberal professors if endowments are not available. Libtard academia played a big role in bringing on this crisis.
