Bar codes back then; don’t think so.

Bar codes back then; don’t think so.

Bar Codes date back further than you think (the 1940s) in industrial applications, and were in regular commercial use by the late 70s once the Universal Product Codes were agreed on.

Columbia could well have had bar codes on their student IDs by then, but I don't know if they really did.

“Bar codes back then; don’t think so.”

The only bar codes I remember back then were...no spitting on the ugly women, and last call. Other than that, the bars I frequented were “codeless”.

The Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History had an exhibit on the history of the bar code back in 1999. It was the Silver Anniversary of the UPC which was first used in 1974 for a six pack of Juicy Fruit.

Back then? The use of linear printing patterns for identification was patented in 1949. Barcodes were being used in supermarkets in the 1970s. The DOD mandated the use of barcodes (Code 39) in 1981 for all products sold to the military. Barry graduated from Columbia College in 1983. However, this card and this number belongs to a student from 1998.
