Shutdown Hurting Mitch McConnell's Approval Rating as Matt Bevin Seeks Key Endorsement

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell's popularity is taking a dive due to the government shutdown, according to a new Gallup survey released Thursday.

The new figures comes as McConnell's GOP primary challenger Matt Bevin is vying to gain the support of a key political organization in Northern Kentucky this week.

Overall, Gallup finds McConnell's net approvals are down by 12 percentage points since Congress failed pass a spending bill to keep federal services and programs running.

"That divide is related to this and speaking to that issue directly, I think de-funding (Obamacare) is the way to go," says Rick Brueggemann, chair of the Boone County Republican Party.

"There may be a motion from what I hear. I don't know how it will play out. It all depends," he says. "There is a strong Tea Party element in Northern Kentucky and expressed sentiment that is largely dissatisfied with many of (Sen. McConnell's) votes."

Brueggermann is against endorsing either candidate officially, but says a motion to support Bevin stems from the state party consistently backing "establishment" candidates over "liberty" or Tea Party contenders.

Boone County has the fourth highest number of registered Republican voters in the state and is considered a Tea Party stronghold.

Last year, the county voted for Congressman Thomas Massie in the 2012 primary and favored Tea Party-backed gubernatorial candidate Phil Moffett over former state Sen. David Williams in the 2011 primary contest.

Since this was published, the Boone County GOP has been lobbied by both McConnell's cadre as well as the goons from the state GOPe. They have decided against endorsing Bevin, a real loss for us who want Mitch gone. Even so, McConnell's plummeting numbers present a real opportunity. Let's elect Bevin to the senate.

His approval numbers are down because he voted for Obamacare.

“Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s popularity is taking a dive due to the government shutdown.”

Really, and I thought it was his statements against other conservative foundations. I think that he is gone because of his disagreements with actual conservatives...and it is a wise decision that he be unelected. He is one of the grand Senate liberal Republicans.

Well, I read the entire article at the link, and Kentucky Republican Party Chairman Steve Robertson, said that he hopes the party won’t make any endorsements IN THE PRIMARY, so that’s GOOD.

Is there any way that Sarah can attend one of his campaign rallies assuming he is a real conservative.

Not really.
This is a local Republican party in Boone. They have a lot of the state’s Republican voters, and have voiced disdain for McConnell. If they endorsed Bevin, we would have a big leg up for ousting Mitch.
The state party has a policy of non-primary endorsement anyway, but they’re clearly gunning for Mitch. The county level GOP are under no such obligations.

Possible, although it is a little early.

However, has Palin ever given a speech for a candidate who was trying to oust an incumbent? Did she attend Mourdock’s rallies? I can’t remember.

Thanks so much for the local take!
My hopes and prayers belong to Matt Bevin.

as it now stands; Sen. *itch "Mumbles" McConnell, has lost support of
most TEA Parties in KY..that doesn't mean they support Matt Blevins.
there some unresolved questions about Blevins...but Mumbles is out.

I wonder what they're smoking down at Gallup.

I expect McConnell to interpret his falling poll numbers as proof that he's being swept up in a general GOP dissatisfaction, instead of it being the result of his Vichy collaboration with Senate Democrats.

Expect McConnell to come out hard in favor of making any deal, just to end the shutdown so he can go back to the comfort of the way things were.

His popularity, such as it is/was, is taking a dive because he wants the repubs to take another dive.

Mitch McConnell is a career politician. As in most all career politicians, they actually take no real stand on any issue and become the tasteless tofu that takes on the flavor of the day.

In his special case, the flavor of the day is to go along to get along with a dessert of a steaming pile of dung.

This guy should have been removed long ago but like all of the other career politicians, he’s been kept in office by all of the special interests he nurtures and the dirty little secrets he knows about all of the other politicians who dare to challenge him.

I have to commend him for the is the consummate politician.
