My healthcare plan nearly doubled this year. There is some buzz tha we can expect the same again this year. What are the forces of Obamacare that are pushing my rates up, though I am not enrolled in the federal program, but through my employer?

Our rates are going up because Obamacare forces health insurance companies to cover high cost people.
Before obamacare, the insurance companies could choose who they covered. Now that choice is made by the HHS secretary.
So in effect, the feds now run the private health insurance companies and make their decisions for them.

Effect is much higher premiums and less care.
Medical Amtrak.

It could be several things.

First, your premiums might have gone up by some amount no matter what.

Second, Obamacare dictates a very rich level of benefits, more than many plans in many states offered before.

Third, your ins. co. has to mitigate against the increased costs they will face via “must issue” and “community rating” that are imposed via Obamacare, they are going to spread this out amoung ALL their insureds whether those people are coming to them via “new” coverage or ‘old” coverage.

I remain convinced that this will not work. Nobody, and I mean pretty much nobody at all, has extra hundreds and thousands of dollars just sitting around that they can be mandated to spend. I’ve known a lot of well off people in my life, but I’ve known very few with that kind of “disposable” income. So I think some of the more ridiculous requirements will be dropped.

However, let’s not forget how many years the Republicans had to enact “sensible” reform and they....just....didn’t.
