Employees at federal prisons arent able to collect a paycheck during the government shutdown, even though the inmates they are overseeing are being paid.
A group of 100 guards at a federal prison camp in Yankton, S.D., still have to work in order to protect human life and property, but will have to trust the government to make good on their promise to retroactively pay them.
In a cruel twist, the criminals locked up in the facility are still receiving their money for services rendered while they are in custody because there is a different funding tier for the prisoners pay.

More per capita than any other civilized or uncivilized nation on the planet.
It might be time to decriminalize a few things.
Like what?
I am personally for, as much as possible, allowing non-violent offenders to be given the chance to make amends to their victims or pay for their acts through community service.
The only people who should be going to prison are those that committed violent acts, massive financial fraud, or those that did commit non-violent offenses who are refusing to make amends or community service.
Decriminalize some things, but up the penalty for others. And not let immoral entities like the EU try to dictate our internal policy on criminal punishment either . . .
How does “community service” make amends to the victim?
I think that when somebody does community service, they should be paid a minimal amount with that money going to the victim.
Maybe the prizonerz(sic) could advance the ‘screws’ some money till the crisis is over.
That wouldn’t lead to currying any favors now would it?
Like whatever can land you in jail, like refusing to mow down the weeds in the alley behind your house and a million other things.
How many people are in jail for refusing to mow weeds in a back alley?
Congratulations!
You are a libertarian.
and they should be paid by whom?
The taxpayers?
In other words you think the taxpayers should foot the bill to compensate all crime victims while the real criminals gets away by sweeping the floor of city hall or something?
I think the idea needs some work, dude.
Libertarians are for allowing criminals off scot-free, except for sweeping or mowing at city hall?
About 300 in this town of 40,000.
I can support that idea as long as city hall fires all workers that inmates can replace without compromising
security.
No, libertarians are for redefining criminality as something that actually harms someone or deprives them of their inherent rights.
What inmates?
Under that idea, these people would not go to jail and the taxpayers would have to fork over more taxes to pay the victims. The taxpayers would be the ones punished while the criminal gets off easy in exchange for a few chores that benefits NOBODY.
Really? You understand that back alleys are public property right?
Me thinks you have pulled some smelly from the nether region.
Maybe you missed the part where the VICTIMS are compensated by robbing the taxpayers?
That sounds like communism.
Well, I certainly expect them back in their cot at 6:00PM.
The work is just part of the incarceration.
I never meant to commute a sentence, just make them work.
