I believe he [McClintock] was a candidate for governor but lost the nomination to Ahnold. That's correct. California conservatives (including yours truly) really wanted McClintock for Governor, but were afraid that he didn't have the numbers to defeat Cruz Bustamante, the left radical Lt. Governor at the time.
We were scared and bullied into throwing our support to Ahnold because he talked a good game, and had the numbers to defeat Bustamante. What a disaster that turned out to be.

He should have been Governor of California a few years back, but the Governator was thrust upon us instead.
