It has nothing to do with labels, it has to do with electing the right individuals. Running a Tea Party candidate in a GOP primary and winning makes defeating the Democrat much easier than if you ran as a third party in a 3-way race against both of them. At least in states where there is no run-off election and the “winner” gets to win with less than 50% of the vote, as Franken did. Being obsessed with what party label someone uses is stupid. Strategizing to get the right people elected is what’s important, not their label.
If Obama had run as a third party Socialist or Green Party, he would have lost handily. That’s not the way to go.
