I would most closely compare McConnell to Reid because of the significant value of both incumbency and leadership power. Each had unlimited funds and each has the influence and power to use their state-wide and national machine to surge to victory. I have zero doubt McConnell would win the general election. No way a majority in KY will send an Obama lackey to Washington right now. The primary COULD be a different story if the challenger runs a great campaign and the grassroots really pound McConnell successfully.
Yes, as you mentioned, the others are Democrats, but they also share incumbency and even in the most anti-incumbent years, few incumbents go home due to their advantages. I am 100% for Bevin to defeat McConnell, but I don’t think McConnell is anywhere close to being challenged by a Democrat no matter where his numbers sit right now.
So is Mitch losing in the polls because he caved to the Dems or because he is a Rep and being blamed for the shutdown.
Actually Bevin started his campaign with negative ads (always a mistake) rather than a pure biographical sketch to introduce himself to the voters and McConnell responded and buried him...that was not a smart move. Bevin also personally appeared in the ad to criticize McConnell rather than have it done through narration...another mistake.
