A petition is up at my workplace to decertify the Teamsters. I understand they already have a majority of employees but they are getting more signatures to make sure there is no doubt. The union is raising dues and people see no value in what they receive for the dues they pay they pay now. Promises of union health insurance and retirement plans made during its certification campaign remain unfulfilled-in fact, the union sent a rep last week to explain how to sign up for Obamacare.
This is also a fairly conservative area and many employees, myself included, resent being forced to not just associate with but financially support an organization that represents the opposite of our values.
The unions are scared sh~!tless about what annual recertification votes would bring.
This tells me, pretty darn loud, that they don’t want to risk it so they just decide not to have a vote and continue to claim legitimacy.
If the union (which is supposed to be run by its members and reflect their views) is so certain that the vast majority wants it to be their bargaining representative, they should be chomping at the bit for recertification.
The “it costs too much” is a specious argument. What costs more, guys...a union election that would cement your legitimacy or all the union printing charges to print up “on strike” signs?
On the other hand, the school district should be at the union’s doorstep with a fistful of $100 bills offering to fund the entire recertification election. If the union takes them up on it, the “it costs too much” excuse is instantly removed. If the union rejects the offer, it’s even MORE clear that they are terrified of allowing their members to vote in a secret ballot election.
A lot of unions bristle with anger at secret ballot elections. It makes it SO much harder to intimidate people.
