Gov. Chris Christie announced today that he was dropping the fight against same-sex marriage in New Jersey by withdrawing his his appeal of a major case that was being heard by the state Supreme Court.
Across the state, gay couples have been getting married today for the first time in New Jersey after the Supreme Court refused on Friday to delay the first weddings while it heard Christie's appeal of a lower-court ruling that legalized gay marriage last month.
Christie said the court, in rejecting his plea for a stay, had made strong statements that settled the larger case.

Went to an auction here in Western PA yesterday. The auctioneer, for some reason, kept making cracks about the NJ gay marriage ruling. I kept expecting the Politically Correct Police to come and arrest him at any moment.
The Republican Party can use the resentment of religious elements over persecution of those who oppose gay marriage that will result from this to get them to vote Republican with some sort of “conscience clauses”.
The GOP does not reverse anything the liberals establish by judicial or legislative means from new government programs to abortion and gay marriage.
They exploit emotions with promises of amendment and modification of what the liberal advance.
