Fourteen million young people between the ages of 20 and 40 take the prescription drug Adderall, or one like it, to treat Attention Deficit Disorder.
Many who take it and even those who prescribe it believe it's helpful, or at least harmless.
But that's not always the case. For Richard Fee, his Adderall addiction led to his suicide.

last week sitting in the doctors office waiting for the three allergy shots to be given. there is a guy on harley davidson pulls in walks up to the window for receptionist. In a loud voice I need my Adderall filled and my Prozac filled, or I am going to be deathly ill. The psychiatric Nurse practitioner is not here today, she is another facility that is 60 miles away. I hate that they moved her office over here with the family and all the crippled people practice. Kept on repeating he needed his adderall and prozac. i simply motioned to the receptionist i am going outside, wheeled my quickie wheelchair out the door, took a look at this harley davidson nice bike but what a loud mouth! I had to refrain from wanting to literally to pick up a disabled leg and shove it up his backside!
In this situation it is the doctors who ought to be shot. They should have administered tests to be certain that this young man actually had ADD or ADHD. There are databases that can be checked to make sure a patient isn’t doctor-shopping and getting extra medication illegally.
People who take these drugs need to be closely monitored. My daughter’s doctor drags her into the office once a month and spends a good bit of time talking to her to make sure the dose and her response to it are appropriate. That is good care. This boy apparently didn’t get it. I hope the parents insist the state licensure board investigate his physician.
I have often thought that it was unfortunate we made 18 the legal age of majority.

This grieving father’s solution—to give the parents of adult children access to their medical records—would probably cause more suicides than it would stop.
