No key, no application, no signup, no nothing. But it is essentially public info so I don’t see a problem.
I just looked again. You need a key once you pass some (unspecified) threshold of requests. Once again, this seems to be fine and normal (a personal pet peeve of mine is when you have to apply for a key just to play around with an API).
You are right. There is no problem here.
