“only a chainlink fence and an occasional roving security patrol to protect it.”
Many, many, moons ago, during a TDY and after a long night of AF drinking, I accidently ended up on the ramp at Minot, in the middle of a raging blizzard. It only took about two minutes before I saw several headlights through the snow, and several weapons pointed at my head.
Things must have changed dramatically from the 80’s.
I’m not packing up ... I’m Packing! Come and Take It zer0 crowd! We Are Ready!
Yep, the “Bent Spear” incident was extraordinary and needs to be explained.
I had a similar experience in the late 70’s, raging blizzard, visibility so poor we could not see buildings or road signs, just tracks in the snow a few feet in front of the pickup.
Finally there was one of those momentary letups, we could see the beacon on the control tower and we were south of it. Looked around and we were right by a B52 in my POV. I did a quick U-turn, and under the protection of near zero visability we made our escape undetected.
