"We do not want to have any more press conferences announcing arrests of people accused of murder. I've done too many of those as mayor," Taveras said Thursday.
That's why local leaders secured a $150,000 grant to help curb gang violence in the city of Providence as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program.
Federal funding will go toward targeting "impact players" on the streets. The city will hire so-called street workers who will spend time getting to know crime-prone areas and work on preventing gang members from turning to violence.
Providence has received the grant in years past. Taveras said it helped assist in reducing gang violence, but he insisted there is a long way to go to make the city safe.

Next, targeting gang leaders does not magically end gang violence. If it was really that easy, we would have ended gangs before now. And I notice that Providence has already received these grants in the past. Apparently, that did not resolve the gang issue. There is never enough taxpayer money.
Finally, the city will hire people to go talk to these gang members about turning from violence. Maybe the gang bangers could try flower gardening instead! I would want to be well armed for that discussion.
Providence, where Chtulhu’s disciples roam?
” local leaders secured a $150,000 grant”
Yeah, that’ll work. Thats just whats been missing from their crime fighting efforts. A 6 figure sum to “local leaders”. I’m sure all the local criminals are now running for their very lives.
Probably the most effective technique against gangs is for judges to issue injunctions against them and their members. Injunctions can be amazingly extensive in their scope.
Prohibited acts include: owning or using cell phones, associating with any other known gang members, public loitering, presence in forbidden neighborhoods, use of vehicles, possession of clothing associated with their gang, use of recognized hand signs, etc.
And when they are arrested for violating any of these, they are put directly before the judge to answer a contempt of court citation, resulting in 4-6 months in jail. No jury trial, strictly a factual presentation by the police.
Use it to feed their increased prison population.
THAT is how you “reduce violence”!!!
Oh....and if you borrow Joe’s menu, it’ll go much further!
Just wondering in what way, exactly.
How much of this 150K will wind up in the pockets of these “local leaders”?
There you go with those pesky questions and details again.
You sound like someone who has been delivered from liberal land too.
