Sen. Ron Johnson to Introduce the ‘If You Like Your Health Plan, You Can Keep it Act’
National Review Online ^ | 10-25-13 | Alec Torres

Senator Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) announced today that next week he will file legislation that will allow Americans to keep their previous health-insurance plans, as President Obama promised. The proposed bill, entitled the “If you Like Your Health Plan, You Can Keep It Act,” would, according to Johnson’s statement amend the Affordable Care Act “to make Obamacare live up to the promises of the politicians who sold the plan to the American public.”

From the press release:

One of the most important promises made by President Obama and Democrat congressional leadership to promote the Affordable Care Act was that Americans who were satisfied with their health plans could keep them. That promise has been broken. More than a million Americans have been notified that the plans they like with the coverage they have chosen have been canceled. Millions more Americans will have the plans of their choice canceled in months to come.

I love this. It’s brilliant. The whole premise of obamacare is that we MUST buy insurance that has all the bells and whistles that a lot of people’s insurance did not cover. That’s why obamacare’s so expensive. It tries to cover everything, does not allow insurance companies to deny preexisting conditions, thus making coverage even more expensive.

If we were allowed to keep our insurance that we liked, we wouldn’t have to have any of the requirements in obamacare. IOW, it would make all the rules in obamacare null and void.

His whole thing about being able to keep your insurance was a big fat whopper of a lie. Let’s make him pay for it.

God bless Ted Cruz. That is why I sent him a campaign donation during the much needed shut down.

Go for it. The timing could be good.

John Roberts found death panels constitutional. A pox on him.

Exactly. If the GOP could act as a unified force, they’d get a lot stopped and influence better legislation. Instead we’ve got a bunch of prima donnas.

Too little too late? I dont know but there is a part of me that is enjoying this complete 0bamacare meltdown. While some decent people will/are getting hurt the RATS are really gonna suffer.

Here in Florida 300,000 policy holders just lost coverage....that means maybe 1,000,000 people if you take in the dependents. I have no sympathy for any if they voted for 0bama...none!

“I am livid at the Administration, John Roberts, the Media and anyone with a D next to their name.”

Roberts is most at fault here. We expected evil from the others; it’s who and what they are. What Roberts did, however, was a blatant betrayal. You’d hope a SCOTUS member would be above caving in to blackmail, but they just aren’t.

“Obamacare is the law of the land and already funded.”

Any law is a law only until the next Congress. It can be changed or eliminated by the next (or same) Congress.

Amendments are the only “laws” that can’t be treated this way (at least that’s the way they were intended).

I really like this idea and recommended it to my congressman before Johnson came out with his plan. The Dems will have a hard time telling the estimated 20+ million people who want to keep their insurance plans that they are going to obstruct this bill - especially now that most people know what’s going on.

Its too bad Johnson didn’t help Congressional Republicans defund obamacare weeks ago.

Johnson imploded when he was on Mark Levin’s show so its gonna take more than this legislation to take him seriously.

The idea behind this legislation sounds worthy, but I have to quibble with the title: it's kind of a joke based on Obama's fraudulent speech pitching Obamacare. Sure, the left has been masterful at giving dumb and inaccurate titles to laws they champion (no better example than the "Affordable Care Act"), but that doesn't mean that the titles of "conservative" bills should humor them. Enacting legislation should be a serious process which is reflected in serious and appropriate titles.

Perhaps a Republican could sponsor a carbon copy of the Affordable Health Care Act, only introduce it as the “Step Right Up and Get Your Very Own Bottle of Snake Oil, All For a Mere Pittance When Compared With Its True Value. Ah, yes. Yes, Indeed.” Act, and do the same with all these pretentiously-titled acts.

Ah, yes. Yes, Indeed.” Act, and do the same with all these pretentiously-titled acts.

To be historically accurate, this selling of snake oil with the grandiose titles of congressional acts goes back a long way. In the Roosevelt New Deal era, there was the "National Recovery Act," which was very much ballyhooed, but fortunately was short-circuited when the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional. (Compare to today's SCOTUS, which doesn't have the guts to do the same with Obamacare's "individual mandate.") It essentially legalized cartels for wage and price fixing, something better suited to Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, or the communist regime in the Soviet Union. If it had lasted for any greater length of time, it would have delayed the actual economic recovery even longer than other socialist policies of the era actually did.

Then, too, the title of the "Social Security Act" was hardly accurate and invented specifically to sell it to the American people by the Democrats of that era.

Unfortunately, it seems as if big government has all too frequently needed these phony tags on legislation and programs since then in order grow into the humongous size it currently is.
