Spring Lake, N.C. A former Harnett County teacher said Monday that she just wanted her students to get a good, hands-on lesson. School district officials said the activity was a little too hands-on, resulting in the teacher's firing.
Miyoshi McMillan wanted her Overhills High School honors biology students to conduct an experiment on blood typing last Thursday, and she used a lab kit that included synthetic blood and seven lancets.
"Some students were, like, 'Oh, this is cool. I want to know my blood type.'" McMillan said.
She allowed students to use the lancing needles to prick their own fingers. After using the needles, the students wiped them with alcohol swabs so the next class could use them.

what in the world was she thinking?
We did it when I was in school
What ever happened to becoming blood brothers anyway?
I think government schools need to focus on the basics and get out of anything else. A teacher encouraging kids to poke themselves with needles should probably go to jail. No good can come of it these days.
Abolish government schools.
As for this ditz, her command of English is weak too.
I did it, too, for biology class.
Nobody had the guts to lance their finger but me. The same happened in college. (Even the nursing students couldn’t stab themselves.)
We always used a fresh lancet, duh.
I don’t see the problem. I did the same thing in H.S. (Except we didn’t reuse the lances)
Pin pricks bad, butt pricks good. /s
some idiot mother got all freaked because aids is transferred by blood
Same here. That’s how I found out I was A+. 5th grade science class.
I dunno. We did it with our scout knives.
And did HIV even exist when you were in school????
Parents were upset because their kids were encouraged to bleed themselves in government screwl.
They have every right to be upset.
I can see firing someone for suspending a kid for making a gun with his fingers and going “pow!”.
I can see reprimanding someone for letting kids stick themselves in a blood-typing exercise. I don’t see firing them, though.
Good idea, flawed execution.
Did this in high school, what’s the big deal except the sharing of the lance....good grief they are like a penny a piece, each should have had their own.
Axes?
Matches?
Rifle Ranges?
Cleanliness?
I don;t think government agents should be making kids bleed
