Maybe making cats work on an assembly line is cheeper than the chinese.....
But I heard the trick to making them work is learning how to herd cats, which is really hard supposedly...

As a kid back in the 50s/60s, I remember a lot of plastic toys that were “Made in Japan” that smelled really bad too.

They probably used an adhesive or sealant with mercaptans in it. Some mercaptans have a ppt smell threshold and they can be persistent.
