Reports: Syrian air base destroyed in missile attack from sea

By YASSER OKBI LAST UPDATED: 10/31/2013 12:59

Unclear who is behind the attack on base located in stronghold of Assad's Alawites, but Syrian, Lebanese media accuse Israel; Channel 2 reports attack's target were S-125 surface-to-air missiles.

A Syrian air defense base near the port city of Latakia was completely destroyed on Thursday morning in a missile attack from the sea, Arab media reported.

According to reports emanating from the rebels seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad, a large explosion occurred near the army base in Latakia on Wednesday night. Witness posted on Twitter that the explosion happened near coastal city Jableh, 30 kilometers south of Latakia, a stronghold of Assad's Alawites.

It is unclear who is behind the explosion or its purpose. There were no reports of casualties.

Members of the Syrian and Lebanese media have charged that Israel is behind the attack. Israel's defense establishment has not responded to the report.

Channel 2 News reported that the attack's target was a S-125 surface-to-air missiles battery.

Syrian air base destroyed in missile attack from sea

A Syrian air defense base near the port city of Latakia was completely destroyed

Big difference between an air base with a couple miles of concrete runway and an air defense base which might just be a couple of missile launchers and a radar.

Indeed. We should be on the lookout for that. But this isn't it. It's just the Joooooooos taking care of business.

The rebels have no air force and are not threatened by surface to air missiles. The only logical conclusion is that they were attacked by someone with an air force, or someone who wishes to facilitate the operation of a hostile air force over Syria. Basically, that means either Israel, or (remotely possible) the U.S.

Not good, well up on the North Med coast of Syria, not a place where Israel worries about any kind of missiles that would be moved into Lebanon.

Lack of acknowledgment indicates it was an intentional act of war.

Obama wagging the dog by sacrificing Turkey?

Whoever did this will get no cover from the UN.

If this turns out bad, Obama knew nothing about it. If it turns out good, Obama will have launched the missile from his bed.

It is odd that I can only find this report in a few foreign sources, like Jpost and other mid-east sources, and they all cite “other sources”.

Which international or even national law allows obama or israel to bomb a Syrian military base? Seems like an unprovoked attack to me. I hope Putin enters the fray to protect Assad, otherwise the muzzie nuts get their own country.

I’ll bet it was Turkey acting for the coalition working to exterminate ASSad. Now that they do not need to screw around with the vacialting Obama led Americans, they can get er done.

Maybe Israel is clearing out the air route on its way to Iran.
