NSW school inspectors recommend closure of Australia's largest Muslim school

Australia's largest Muslim school, Malek Fahd Islamic School, is facing imminent closure after New South Wales Board of Studies inspectors recommended its registration not be renewed in 2014.

ABC News has obtained a letter that NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli wrote to the school on Wednesday stating he was "gravely concerned" about the school.

He also said that the board had recommended to him the kindergarten to year 12 school's registration not be renewed in 2014.

Among the Minister's concerns are questions over attendance, Higher School Certificate curriculum, educational quality, safe environment and buildings.

Board of Studies inspectors were at the school this week.

I'm a big supporter of private schools. And I like the way Australia handles things so that private schools receive a significant amount of government funding (though still far less than government schools) in a pseudo voucher system that means one third of Australian children attend private schools, and the state system has to meet certain standards to remain competitive in an environment where people have significant choice to go elsewhere. And I have absolutely no problem with Muslims having their private schools on the same basis as any other faith.

But they also have to be held to the same standards and Malek Fahd is in the mess it's in, because that hasn't happened - up until last year they were allowed to get away with breaches that no Catholic or Anglican or Uniting Church or Jewish school, or those of any other faith would have been allowed to get away with. They were given a year to get back in line, and at the moment it looks like they haven't. They can't keep being treated as a special case. Personally, if they've made significant progress in one year - enough to think they will be OK with one more year - I'd give them one more year, simply for logistical reasons - the government schools around their largest campus can't absorb 2000 students - but they have to be able to show they will meet the appropriate standards.

Islamic schools that are like any other religious schools are OK - Madrassas aren't. And if they don't watch out, they will wind up with Madrassas.

What exactly is the difference between a moderate muslim and a radical muslim?

Location and public relations. But on principle, they are the same.

I’m no expert on Islam, so I can’t parse the theology. But I know there are a lot of Muslims who just want to live their lives without hurting anybody else - and some who want to hurt as many people as they can.

The Islamic private schools I know best - because my school has contacts and connections with them - are schools that are trying to teach their kids to live as a positive part of Australian society, just as my school does. I want them teaching Muslim kids that message - because I worry about the messages they might be getting from other places.

I would say that they are the same. It is just that one, publicly says he wants to do you in, the other doesn't say anything.

You have to understand that to be a Muzzie in good standing with Allah means either physically going out and doing jihad or quietly support it by sending money or via some other way. It is THE core teaching of Islam.

Taking the jihad out of Islam renders it not Islam.
