Alabama Republicans Bradley Byrne and Dean Young are running neck and neck ahead of next week’s special runoff primary election in Alabama’s First Congressional District, according to a new survey.
The poll, conducted by the GOP consulting firm Cygnal, shows Young, a tea party-aligned real estate investor, with a 43.2 percent to 40.2 percent lead over Byrne, a former state senator and unsuccessful 2010 gubernatorial candidate. The results are within the survey’s 3.03 percent margin of error. The poll of 1,027 likely voters was conducted Wednesday.
A Byrne loss would come as a shock to the business community and Washington establishment, which have rallied around Byrne in recent weeks — in no small part out of fear of Young, who has been quoted as saying that he’s “against homosexuals pretending like they’re married” and who’s called for President Barack Obama’s impeachment.
Byrne has won the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and has received donations from a large group of House Republicans, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). He also has the backing of former GOP Rep. Jo Bonner, who resigned from the Mobile-area 1st District seat in August to take a job with the University of Alabama System.
The financial support has helped Byrne vastly outraise Young, who has been running a low-budget, grass roots-focused campaign. Through Oct. 16, Byrne had taken in nearly $690,000 to Young’s $260,000.
Byrne and Young are facing each other in a runoff election on Nov. 5 after finishing atop a crowded Sept. 24 primary field. Whoever wins Tuesday’s runoff is all but certain to win the Dec. 17 general election for the seat, which tilts heavily Republican.
We should all be praying that Dean Young will win.
Can anyone tell us if the Politico has accurately described the situation? Is Young really the guy we want to win? What passes as “conservative” in the Republican Party in Bama can be tricky at times.

BELIEVE ME: I can find NO ONE who wants Byrne to win.
Byrne is a silver spoon career politician who acts like he’s the “chosen one” by that POS Joe Bonner who bounced in the middle of his term to take a job at University of Alabama - a position his sister arranged for him and could have left vacant until he completed his term.
Bonner wasnt honorable enough to finish his term.
Young, a former marine officer, is DEFINATELY the choice.

Just gave a small donation to Dean Young’s campaign. This will be an important special election leading up to the 2014 elections.
There was an editorial in The Birmingham News earlier this year by Bradley Byrne in which he stated his support of amnesty for illegal aliens - just about knocked my socks off to think I voted for him in the 2010 Primary. The state educational lobby, the AEA, knocked him out of that primary - we have open primaries in AL. While I continue to think our incumbent GOP governor is milquetoast, I have to thank my lucky stars that Byrne didn't prevail in 2010. Hope he loses this time also.
