I knew there were problems when the A1 added that near-useless “forward assist”.
I thought, “Is somebody kidding me?”

Up front: I'm not familiar (experience wise) with the AR12/MKA-1919 and I don't know of anyone that owns one.

Personally for home defense, I have a Mossberg 500 sans stock; just the pistol grip. It's short, reliable, and easy to maneuver in tight spaces (think house-to-house going down hallways and other tight spaces). The lack of stock also makes breaching easier, especially if you're short. I'm 6'5" so I don' have a problem with a stocked shotgun, but it is easier nonetheless with just a pistol grip. A lot of my friends have a variation of the Mossberg (cruiser, rolling thunder etc; however, it often comes down to personal preference - some people like Benalli.

I've been considering getting a "fully converted" Saiga 12 with collapsible M4 style butt stock that has been worked by a reputable gunsmith. They have been converted to pistol grip and the gas system worked to fire "low brass" in semi-auto. And, the 20 rnd drum is attractive too. But, those are a bit pricey for me at the moment and I'm happy with the Mossy, More of a "want to have," than a "need to have."

It’s worth that half the time it goes straight through; in other words when you need it, it ain’t worth nuthin. Contrast that with a guy I know that got shot once with, presumably, 7.62x54 - the hole in his leg was about the size of my fist.

Yeah, if the round won’t chamber, just ram it in there anyway...

You are right about the wound potential of the M16A1 that I used in Vietnam with the 1:12 barrel twist rate that barely stabilized the 55 grain M193 bullet in flight which increased the likelihood of the bullet tumbling upon impact with flesh or an intervening object (like twigs or brush). But the Pentagon decided they wanted longer effective range accuracy (out to 500 meters or so) so they changed the barrel twist rate to the faster 1:7 to better stabilize the heavier 62 grain M885 bullet in the SS109 cartridge at longer range. The resultant greater accuracy comes at the expense of the instability that results in greater wound effect.

I still think that the M16/AR is one of the greatest assault rifles EVER no matter the barrel twist. All three of my M4 types chambered for 5:56 NATO I have re-barreled with the 1:9 twist as a good compromise.

P.S Got another with the upper reciever chambered for .458 SOCOM. That cartridge has a 300 grain bullet that leaves a 16 inch barrel at about 2000 FPS. Its muzzle energy is roughly eqiuivalent to the .460 S&W Magnum with similar bullet weights. It uses the standard AR-15/M16 30 round mag but holds 10 rounds. You can hunt grizzlies with it.

The ARs are nothing if not versatile

Thanks for your kind reply. I’ve never owned an AR-15 (or M16) but I would someday love to get an M16-A1 like the one I used in the Corps. “Versatile” is right. And light. The iron sights are decent, and cleaning/maintenance is pretty easy and quickly handled.

If they’re “semi-automatic” they ain’t “machine guns”.

A friend of mine had a low-powered guns and a bully at the beach kicked sand in his face and took his girlfriend. That was it for me. I got a high-powered gun, the chick and that bully won’t bother us again!

Yeah, if the round won’t chamber, just ram it in there anyway...

And if the shell won't eject, add an "ejection assist", and if the magazine won't seat properly, add a "magazine assist". Etc.

You’re right. Most any hunting rifle suitable for taking even modest game hits harder than the 5.56 ARs. But I guess you can’t get the sensationalism you’re going for if you say it was a few dozen of one of the most popular and common rifle configurations...

I thought the “tumble” is actually the rounds tendency to de-jacket on impact on hits under ~100 yards.

I don’t have much technical expertise in the matter. When I think of “tumble”, I think of a round hitting a body and then either bouncing around to tear up organs and produce traumatic internal damage, or at least producing a massive exit wound.

Tumbling is the result of when the bullet leaves the barrel it not only rotates it moves in a slight corkscrew fashion is it goes down range. So when the bullet strikes something it is slightly off center and will tend to tumble. This “ corkscrew” dissipates as it goes down range till the bullet stabilizes and travels point first. Doctor Mann in his book “The Bullets Flight” explains the phenomenon.
General Julian Hatcher shows in his book “ Hatcher’s Notebook That the Ball M2 out of the 30-06 would also tumble at close range. The British went
so far is to use aluminum in the nose of their 303 bullets to enhance that effect.

Since when did .223/5.56 become considered "high powered?" It's a varmint round.

And the more "varmints" that get killed while trying to hurt/rob others, the more "high-powered" they become...
