According to the Awami Colony police, three robbers riding a motorbike pulled up near the restaurant soon after the arrival of its owners son, Mukhtar Ali Lashari, from a bank. They demanded cash and opened fire on him and his father, Jan Mohammed, when he resisted. They also killed the owner of the neighbouring barber shop, Ayaz Sultan, while fleeing. In the meantime, a big crowd gathered there and opened fire on the suspects, leaving one of them dead. They thrashed another one who took shelter in a nearby house while the third suspect escaped.
However, according to DIG East Munir Ahmed Shaikh, the suspect was killed when a guard of the restaurant fired at the robbers. He said the police reached the spot in Bilal Chowrangi and surrounded the house where the other suspect was hiding.
Around 2,000 people had gathered there, some of them were armed and wanted to kill the suspect, the DIG said.
As the police advanced to arrest the suspect and shift him in an armoured personnel carrier, the mob hurled rocks at police vehicles and opened fire on them. In an ensuing violence, three to four police vans were damaged. The vehicle of SP Landhi also came under fire, the DIG said. The windowpanes were smashed during the violence but the officer miraculously remained unhurt, he added.
