NEW BRITAIN (CT) A student still wearing his Halloween costume from the weekend caused alarm when he walked through Central Connecticut State University Monday, prompting a campus lockdown and a massive armed response from police.
After police sorted things out, student David Kyem apologized.
"I'm sorry for all the commotion and the fear and the confusion," said Kyem, 21, a senior from Newington. "I'm sorry for any problems. It's obviously a big misunderstanding."
Central police charged Kyem Monday night with breach of peace and released him after he posted $1,000 bail. He is the son of Central geography Professor Peter Kyem. Sign Up For Traffic Text Alerts
Kyem's costume, which included camouflage pants, a tactical vest, a mask and a plastic sword and handgun, caused alarm among some students, who called 911 and reported an armed man on campus at about noon.
Kyem said he wore his costume when he returned from a weekend at the University of Connecticut because he couldn't fit all of the costume pieces into his backpack. A friend dropped him off in downtown New Britain, he said, and he caught a bus to campus.
The trouble began on his walk from the bus stop to his dorm, James Hall.
"I could see a tactical vest something I wore when I was on the SWAT team and in the Marine Corps," said Nicholas Federici, 28, a senior from Wethersfield, and a veteran and former police officer. "These vests have a place to put your handgun. I could clearly see where the holster was and there was a handle coming out consistent with a semiautomatic handgun."

America, a culture of old ladies.
bill his family for the expense of the police respone etc
this “kid” is an idiot
what did he expect people to do??
really?
Given the events of the past 2 years alone
You think your college student shouldn’t call the cops if they see a man in camouflage, tactical vest and with apparent weapons walking onto campus, into a theater, into an airport terminal, into a school, into a mall, into an office building?
roids do strange things to a mind.
Personally, I think people who saw him should limber up their own weapons and be ready to fire if he does anything threatening. Walking through campus armed to the teeth but with all weapons sheathed or holstered is not a threat.
An armed society is a polite society. Our problem is that too many wusses have convinced us to be an unmarmed society.
"unmarmed" = "unarmed"
A vest with a handgun protruding. How did this guy miss the VT shooting?
Absolutely agreed. We’ve become a country of old women.
My friends son went to a school Halloween party dressed as an Army soldier. He had one of those flashlights that has a 90 degree angle in it and he was shining it on other kids and making a sound “z-z-zap” like a ray gun.
A chaperone teacher told him to knock it off or he would be suspended for 30 days for imitating a gun at at school.
How F’d up are we as a society now, really?
I swear this is a true story!
“really?”
Yeah, really. This guy killed how many people?
