AP Interview: Bing says bankruptcy ‘inevitable’ (Detroit mayor, not search engine)
Associated Press ^ | Nov 7, 2013 4:49 PM EST | Corey Williams

Outgoing Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says the once-thriving automotive capital of the world had no choice but to file for bankruptcy after it “hit bottom,” buried by high pension and health care obligations and millions of dollars in bond debt.

But Bing told The Associated Press that while he anticipated the decision to make Detroit the largest city in U.S. history to seek bankruptcy protection, he remains convinced the state could have done more to help Detroit avoid it. …

(Michigan Gov. Rick) Snyder’s office says the governor and legislators have found ways—outside of a state bailout—to help Detroit. These include provisions in a state law that continues the rate in which the city can collect taxes. That adds up to $164 million in annual savings, according to Snyder’s office. A dedicated $10 million also was steered to Detroit to help tear down vacant, blighted structures. …

The union members of Detroit should sue the Democrat party for fraud. Better yet, the Democrat party should offer to voluntarily pay the difference for these people’s pensions. They always talk about caring, but nothing says caring like cold, hard Democrat party cash.

Clearly, Dave Bing should replace Cathline Sebellius.

I've never had any major issues with Dave Bing. He may be a democrat but he's relatively rational and wasn't a thief. He just didn't have the steel in him for the job.

The only problem with that is the fact that the city council would accept nothing less than a blank check with no oversight. They fought tooth and nail against Canada building a new bridge for no other reason than the fact that they won't have access to the funding.

They are the beggar who will slap the sandwich out of your hand and demand a $20 instead.

And he played Basketball at Syracuse with Jim Boeheim, can't be all that bad! My dad knew him a little bit. He was overwhelmed and unprepared for what faced him. Not to make excuses.

Detroit promised things it could never pay for and now it wants everyone to pay it for them. How about the mayor and city council and staffs losing all their pay and benefits as a start?

Back in his day the NBA didn’t pay well. When he tried getting a bank loan for a house as an NBA player the bank wouldn’t give him the loan so he went to work for the bank to get the money that way.

Reagan gave him the Minority businessman of the year award for Bing Steel.

He’s a democrat but no Kwame Obama. He’s been less friendly with Obama than Chris Christie.

I met Mr. Bing at a Christmas party once for a company of his called Detroit Heading. I was a sort of lend - lease maintenance manager helping his guys get going.

Everything and everyone in that non-union environment was rah-rah including me. There was no shortage of cash or work and everybody worked their tails off for year end bonuses, and out performing expectations.

Bing was mostly an inspirational figure then, but his people were absolutely top notch folks.

When he took the job as Mayor I hoped he could get that old winning team spirit going with the City of Detroit but I knew that would be tough, and I'm sure he knew it too.

I'm around these folks daily in my work. Those who think the world owes them everything, and those who know nothing is earned without hard work. Nothing has really changed unless you listen to the wrong people. And even then, it doesn't really change anything.

One of his first acts as mayor was to fire some 50 city bus drivers who called an informal strike. He said service had been unaffected and their services would no longer be needed. (It helps that there is a private bus company there to compete) He got into a legal fight with the union because he wanted them to collect their own dues.

He also launched into a great rant at the city council for managing to become wealthy off the bones of a decaying city.

You don’t understand.
A quote from my father (RIP-the prototypical Irish Catholic) will illustrate:

“A Kennedy is someone who wants to give your money to the poor and get credit for doing it.”

Unless you are looking for an at least semi-trendy restaurant, pub, food court, or clothing outlet, other search engines are much more useful. Not that other search engines could not find them either, just that they do not by default assume the search term you entered has one of those options tied to it and puts them at the top of the list as Bing does.

Wait, how did you know they were democrats?

I read an article about bankrupt Detroit and a bunch of politicians, including one named as a felon. But, never once in the article did I see anything about a political party.

Come Comrades, let us move to this glorious utopia:

He inherited Detroit's debt, a budget deficit topping $300 million, a bloated city administration, nearly 90,000 non-working streetlights, inefficient public bus system and other problems.

Close to 10,000 vacant houses have been demolished

10,000 vacant houses? That is almost five times as many PEOPLE in the town I grew up in.

BTW, I'd say it's more than the bus system that's inefficient.
