Smith & Wesson to repair veterans memorial near Springfield headquarters, take over maintenance

Gunmaker Smith & Wesson announced Thursday it will spend $200,000 refurbishing and renovating the Roosevelt Avenue veterans memorial flagpole near its headquarters.

The memorial, built in 1932 at the entrance to the former Veterans Memorial Golf Course, suffered weather damage for decades before the pole itself blew over in the June 2011 tornado.

At the time the monument was built, Smith & Wesson was located on Stockbridge Street.

"First off, we pass it by every day," said James Debney, Smith & Wesson's president and CEO. "It's right on our doorstep. It would be insulting not to do something."

The monument work is expected to be completed in time for Memorial Day 2014 with a 55-foot-tall flag pole and a flag that might be as large as 20 by 40 feet.

Debney said Smith & Wesson plans to add dates of the wars that have occurred subsequent to 1932 on the monument. Dates for previous wars are already there.

It’s not an election year.

Have you noticed all of the Smith and Wesson billboards around Springfield lately?

Wars involve GUNS! No one talks about GUNS in Massachusetts anymore. Defending the free world is fine, just as long as you don't use GUNS to do it.

Bravo Smith & Wesson! Pretty far from the Bangor Punta/HUD days. M&P is a great product line and the addition of Trevor Baucomb to the pro team......

A company worth supporting again!

Been a while since I was in Springfield, but I remember it to be a dangerous dump.

Looks like a pretty ordinary flagpole. I like the monuments that include statues of soldiers of the period, I love looking at the uniforms, weapons and equipment.
