FDA moves toward abolishing trans fats
Politico ^ | Nov 7, 2013 | HELENA BOTTEMILLER EVICH

The FDA announced Thursday that there is no safe level of partially hydrogenated oils. The move — unusually bold for an agency that typically leaves additive safety to the private sector — is the first step in what could be a long road to removing trans fats, which are still widely used to improve the texture and shelf stability of processed foods like frosting, doughnuts and crackers.

There is no safe level of consumption of artificial trans fats, Hamburg stressed.

Consumer advocates are applauding the FDA’s actions.

> I do not understand that nobody seems upset over this.

That’s because they don’t understand its just to set a precedent to set the stage for the future of things to come. People will only begin to understand when they find out trans fats are in just about every snack made except for fruits. They will make them available but at a higher price. The feds will say its for “our own good”. I’ve always said they’’d be coming for our chocolate one day and it looks like that day is upon us. The feds have learned how to make big money by regulaing every facet of our life. Notice they will almost never prohibit an activity if the have the capacity to do so; they will just charge you for an infraction for violating the regulations / rules that they set up in the first place. They make a killing doing so.

” Coffee is good. Coffee is bad. Oat bran is good. Oat bran is bad. Chocolate is bad. Chocolate is good. Alcohol is bad. Alcohol is good.

It just goes on and on and will continue to do so until they run out of products or ingredients to demonize and then reverse themselves on.”

Providing us information — reliable or not is one thing, but RULING us, BANNING food is another thing altogether. Not to mention that as you point out, conflicting info is coming out.

And...um...let me be clear...um...If you like your Dr. Pepper...um...you can...um...KEEP your Dr. Pepper...

Why not just declare alchohol, tobacco, and ALL foods controlled substances and be done with it?

I am upset about it - and so much else. Who elected these Commies? What if I WANT to use Crisco in my cookies? What about personal responsiblity? And most importantly - how do we stop these thugs? Probably the questions that always come up when a dictator slides into the government unrecognized. At what point do you do something? Do you fight every single thing or just get a bucket of tar and a couple of chickens and clean out the White House?

That's where it's going unless your fellow citizens and residents get control of themselves.

Technically that’s what elections are for, throw the bums out - but people first need to recognize the problem and the scary thing is that most don’t make the connection.

A few years ago we made the switch to real butter, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and lard. We don’t eat trans fats. That’s our choice. Anybody who wants to eat it be my guest. I don’t think we need Big Gov regulating this.

I don't know if it was just a coincidence, but after they got rid of the transfats the local KFCs started tasting pretty bad to mediocre. I never went to KFC for healthy food - just tasty food. Now I just don't go.

“We don’t eat trans fats. That’s our choice. Anybody who wants to eat it be my guest. I don’t think we need Big Gov regulating this.”

This is exactly the point — they can give us information and let us decided of our own free will, we don’t need the government forcing us to eat or avoid certain foods.

While I agree with everything you say; I would like to point out that not all margarine contains trans fats. I’ve used Becel margarine for decades. It contains zero trans fats, and tastes very good. Becel is popular in Canada; but, it might be sold under a different brand name in the USA.

Generally speaking, if you have to keep the margarine refrigerated, to prevent it from becoming a liquid, then it’s very low in trans fats.

I like two out of the three fat butts in Post 6. The fat oneone the right needs to be downsized though.

It bothered me greatly when McDonalds changed their grease!

They stopped using beef tallow to please the Hindus.

Generally speaking, I just always use butter.

I'm also trying to emulate the example of my 93-year-old great uncle, who has consisted and persisted for the past 80 years on a strict diet of rare beef, fried eggs, coffee, whisky and cigarettes.

Yep. You must eat what we say for the good of society. After all, how is it fair, commrade, that others are forced to pay for your bad eating habits in higher insurance costs? We must fundamentally transform the way we eat!

Forward, commrades! Everybody jump on board for the big win!

Well Krispy Kreme and Duncan Donuts have already eliminated most transfats. So donuts around here are safe.

Are maybe you were talking about those stale donuts you buy in the grocery store that are already a month old. Yeah, I’ll miss those. NOT!

“Of our own free will”

That is the crux of the matter. God gave us free will but evidently the government doesn’t seem to agree with the concept.

If I choose to eat a container of Criso flavored with salt and sugar...followed by a cigarette and vodka rocks...that is my business and my business alone. If my insurance chooses to cancel my coverage that is their prerogative and I deal with the consequences.

This started with cigarette smokers and has now spread to food. Makes ya wonder what is next.

When they came for the smokers I did nothing because I didn’t smoke...
