And most of the blacks have been there for longer than most of the whites, since the blacks got here before 1815, when the British stopped their role in the transatlantic slave trade, whereas most of the whites got here in the huge wave of immigration which arrived in NYC in the late 19th and early 20th century

Blacks in NYC are predominantly not the descendants of the pre-1815 slaves in the Northeast.

They're emigrants from the South almost entirely, and it dates to the Depression and WWII.

I assume you're talking about NYC. After 300 years in America, I really don't identify as "German" or "English" or "Scots-Irish" other than the catch all phrase "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant" which is sort of a genetic-religious cohort.

But I really prefer the nationality that my ancestors took on after rebelling against their corrupt rulers in the 1770's in the Carolinas: "American".

I really have no other nationality, and people who come here and want to live in my country with me, vote in my elections, try to rule me, but self-identify as something with a hyphen, can leave.

America, baby. Love it or Leave it.

Like I said, these census demographic categories aren’t necessarily the person’s main self-identification: all we know is that’s the box they tick on the form once every 10 years.
